Hi, just joined the forum and look forward to learning more aobut pond building and maintenance. Purchased my property 3 years ago (439 acres) and ready now to start upgrading the water habitat and ponds. Currently having my Water Rights reviewed and confirmed. On paper shows 2 acre standing and 100 inches from one of the year-round streams.

My hope is to dam up the upper valley behind the cabins in the narrow canyon. Remove the cabins and create a large pond in the same area.

Looks like areas of New Mexico or Colorado? Where are you? That will make a difference on the advice you receive.

Eastern Idaho, 15 miles s/e of Idaho Falls, thanks!

The property was actually one of Idaho's State Fish Hatcheries in 1901, the original 2 ponds are still on the property.

My hope is to get permits to dam the Spring up the canyon and rechannel the stream to improve the fish habitat across the valley floor.

Neat, neat place. Do you live there full time?

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

That actually has been a problem. I live in southern California, the property is up in Idaho. I did have a friend living there for a year, but the last 2 years it has been vacant except for weekend activities for local friends. The original earth dam collapsed and the water diverted from 2 of the ponds.

My goal is to take the next 3 years and create a resort/farm as a business.

Once my Water Rights have been expanded/established then I can work on the engineering of the property. I am so glad to have come across this site, I hope it helps me avoid many mistakes that are bound to happen for a novice like myself.

Amazing pc of property Scott! A hearty welcome to the show.
I assume that utility power has been routed to your cabins...? (just curious; those "out in the middle of nowhere" properties intrigue me).
Keep this project high profile on this forum. It will be a blast to follow.

No power on the property, although the entire western side of my property are 43 of the largest windmills you have ever seen. Bringing power to my property was quoted at over $1m last year - so that option is off the table. The property is going to be 100% off the Grid. Plenty of wind up on the cliffs and water running thru the valley, so I believe there are options available.

Quite an undertaking might be an understatement! Starting with authenticating/expanding water rights and seeking permits for now.

I added another photo to my first post, and am interested in referrals anyone has on Aqua Habitat. I am considering working with the company to establish new stream and pond design.
