I would suggest that it depends on your water temperatures during summer. The advantage of triploids is that they don't divert energy to gonads/reproduction, and they instead put that energy into body growth. The disadvantage of triploids is that they have bigger and thus fewer red blood cells. As a result, they are not as effective at oxygen transfer. This really doesn't seem to matter under ideal conditions. However, if your pond warms to perhaps 70F in summer, the trout will be stressed, and at this time, diploids will survive better than triploids. Maybe a small thing, but one you might want to consider.

Great info Dave... I had forgotten trilploids had reduced red blood cell counts.

You can type in fountain pumps on google and it will come up with a ton aof diffrent pumps you can buy to airate your pond. You can buy some that take up less electricity than a light bulb. All you have to do is run an extention cord to your pond and thin aim the end of your fountain pump into the air. The splash will airate your pond

Man this forum is really going down hill. Yeah, well . . . Ever since this thread was started, I my brain has been scaring me. I feel like I'm beginning to think like Jeff. With singloid, diploid, triploid, quadloid, and now schizloid trout to choose from, I went with schizloid for this winter's trout in our pond. They look like normal rainbow, but they have multiple characteristics and do not become hook shy, no matter how many times you catch them. Each time you throw them back they think they are different fish.

Sounds like a good characteristic to have Ken... Are you referring to Ken thinking like me or to his trout thinking they are different fish or both?

I wouldn't wish thinking like me on anyone. Heck sometimes even I wished I didn't think like me.

Of course I'm glad I don't think like Theo, but that is an entirely subject matter that would require a thread of it's own.

But Ken, will it breed true? Like most trout, they will not reproduce in small ponds. They are not sterile, however, when the do reproduce, it is my understanding that they look a lot like green sunfish, except they are rainbow colored.

Maybe a small thing, but one you might want to consider. With all the spawning stress problems I am having with my male brook trout, and subsequent disease, I have learned from a pathologist I may not have these problems if my brook trout were triploids. Unfortunately I am not aware of anyone that produces them. I do know they plant them in at least one Canadian province as I have pictures of them caught through the ice. If I ran my well year around and set up an iron filter in winter I would consider producing my own triploids with pressure shock. It may come to that or I may stop growing out trout altogether.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Did I miss where you gave the details of this pond?
and can you breed schitzoid trout so the voices in their head all say "eat it!"?
