This fall seems to have produced more leaves than usuall. It has been so bad that I can't keep them out of the pond. Moving around the pond has done little to arrest the siduation.

How many leaves will it take to up set the natural balance of my pond? Mostly maple and poplar leaves along with pine needles are the problem.

Scruffy, I guess it's one of those "it all depends" answers, I'm no expert but it should depend on your fish load, whether your aerating, and how much water input you've got.
I get tons of leaves in the pond with no problems yet, but I have 95GPM flowing in and I check it with a test kit, which should give you an idea of ammonia, nitrites and nitrates, also an oxygen test kit would be helpful.
How's your water level, and do you still see any fish?

You wouldn't believe the the water level.

Four months ago it was a pond. Today it's little more than a large puddle, must have dropped at least 6 feet. The fish; one trout maybe two have made it through the summer and have grown, the PS really have grown.

My concern is the water level for the pending winter, and the leaves. The only good might be they will stop the leak over time. The water is clear for what water there is. The pond has about two feet of water, luckly there is still about 20 x 40 feet of it.

I guess really the leaves are the least of your problems, like you said maybe they will slow or stop the leak.
Hopefully the level will rise before real cold weather sets in so you don't have fish Popsicle's.

Tom,
My problem strated because the excavator dug to deep.

When I built the pond he hit ledge and broke though. This resulted in the pond filling, but also emptying when the water table changes. Tried to cap it with clay and bentonite but no success. If I had the money I'd dig it out again and fill the ledge with concrete. That might stop it.

Well try to Plant when the soil is much enough, not just the air, is warm, make soil is more workable, avoid over watering to your plant. Keep retain the moisture in your plant and keep roots cool.
