I love looking at everyone's pictures so I thought I'd share.

Here is a link to the progress of our cabin - my dad is doing everything himself (I assist when I'm back in the states which means I have helped exactly 4 days since work began in February) except for the metal roof which should start going up in a week or so. He's starting to run electrical and plumbing now.

(Hope this link works - I was going to try and post pics directly to the site but I'm not patient enough, yet).

Here are more pictures of the property, including pictures of the ponds - Bowen Pond and Snake Lake.

Great looking property, and fantastic cabin, looks like there's gonna be plenty of room in it.

yeah, I should have called it the bungalow - it originally started out being 1 story, 600 sq. ft - 1 br/1 bath with open kitchen/great room. It is now 1500 sq. ft, 2 story, with 1 br/1 bath downstairs, and 2 br/1 bath upstairs with a walk-in attic office above the great room - front and back porches go up next.

...and when you're done, you'll still look back and think "ya know, maybe we should'a made it a little bigger"

Great pictures. I was impressed with the sub floor and your use of brackets. Too often people skip this and in a few years, it's moving and the entire building has shifted.

Then you went two stories and created a full sized house....

There are limits to what you can load those exterior piers. Then the taller they are, the more racking you will have. From the pictures, it's hard to tell, but were the perimiter beams big enough for the load of the house?

Since it's a cabin and not a main residence, I can see where it might not be that big of a deal, but you still spent allot of money on it, and will continue to put more money into it. I would brace those posts with either diagnal bracing or sheething. Having the exterior sheething come down as far as possible will help, but there's no telling for sure from the pictures what was done.

Does it snow there?

Sorry to be a bummer and I hope it all works out for you.

Eddie

Thanks Eddie - no real snow in middle Georgia. We got a couple inches last year and it was gone within a day. We've had the inspector out a few times, as well as a couple builder friends - they are all ok with the design so far - upstairs is only about 400 sq. ft. As it is a cabin that will be used on a limited basis, I think we'll be ok, though my dad and I will discuss the diagonal bracing idea. We'll also be adding a front and back porch which will provide more support.

Sounds good. I'm glad to hear that you've had it inspected. Most of the ones I've dealt with are pretty sharp and spot things right off. While not engineers, they have a pretty good idea of how things work and should be put together.
