I get an orange scum on my trout pond on the windward side from time to time. I'm pretty sure it related to the iron in the water. But don't know if I'm looking at iron bacteria or precipitated iron, or both. It doesn't worry me in the slightest.
Does the pond get an inflow or spring? Is the water high in iron?
Do you have any trees near the pond? Some trees give off an oily residue.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Cecil hit it on the head... Most likely related to iron in the water.

Cecil: Thank you for your reply. Yes, willows by the pond and eucalyptus nearby probably leaching water and maybe iron? This is the first year to have the orange oily stuff. When the wind really thickened it up by the north narrow part I just finally set to scooping and tossing it aside. Pretty much thined it out and then it went away. The pond then got milky, now cleared up. Algae forms some on the edges from tree roots. This is my first encounter with a forum so am not up to speed yet with adding topics or icons.
