I've heard of tiger/gorilla/F-1 etc bass. Where is the best fish farm to order fingerlings for these special gene pool bass? Are there genetically altered bass available to the public?

Tell us where you are and somebody will probably chime in.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I'm located in the west (pacific coast), so a fish farm that can send via FedEx will be great. My first priority is a good gene pool so location of the fish farm is no issue. Also don't have to be bass that can withstand cold weather.

If you're warm enough why bother with F1's, and why not just go with Florida strain bass? They seem to be doing pretty good in some of the reservoirs in California.

An actual state would help us even more to locate a hacthery for you. Fed Exing even fry has it's negatives. Sometimes survival is not that good.

The waterbody is located in oregon. It's in the valley that never gets to freezing temps.

Here are the only two warmwater fish suppliers I could find in Oregon. Are you near California by any chance? If so I can provide a list of California fish suppliers too. They may be more likely to have Florida largemouths. Let me know.

I live in alabama and Ive been doing alot of reading on this. I am going to stock my pond with tiger bass from "American Sportfish" located in montgomery alabama. From what ive read they are into selective breeding. As in they catch ther fish and tag them. The ones selected for breeding are supposed to meet a certain criteria, a certain weight and caught a certain amount of times. In there articles which, Ive read a few now, say that they are breeding a more aggresive fish. That is what im wanting to buy anyways. Just curious has anyone in the forum here heard of these guys, or had dealings with them? like to get some feed back if possible.

Thanks for the info Cecil.
Like newpondguy, I'm looking for "special" bass genes. Whether it be aggressive nature or size/growth. Any known fish farms in California that do something similar to "American Sportfish"?

newpondguy :

I am trying an experiment with their tiger LMB now to see if it improves catchability. Here is a link with pics. I have done business with Barry Smith with ASF for 10+ years (and others as well). Bob has visited their facilities and Greg Grimes knows them as well. Probably some others here as well. You could email Greg and ask him about the product and people.

Nwbasser,

Here's one of those "free advice is worth what you pay for it" comments:

In my experience, just about anything fish or animal, that you might want to raise and own will do far better if you can get local stock. I realize you are after genetics, but I would suggest you would be way ahead by finding the best genetics possible in your local area.

Local options just work a lot better for me in livestock and fish, but then East Texas is a pretty tough environment also. Good luck!

I agree with ML. With all the SoCal and Calif. Delta LMB genetics I would start there unless you are way up in Wash.

I'll take your word for it guys. I've been trying to google for a list of fish farms in Cal, with no luck. Anyone have a good list I can look at and start making calls to?

I think but am not sure that Greg Grimes knows a hatchery out there as he has helped others with such. Just email him at greg@lakework.com .

I have stocked F1 bass prior to them being called tiger bass and pure norhterns prior to being called Gorilla. Call them what you will we have had great success with the fish from American Sportfish. So new pond can't go wrong with thee fish.

However I agree with ML if in Oregon go with local strain fish. The genetics do matter but I feel proper forage managemt is much more important than a fish that might grow well but succumb to some environmental condition not genitically programmed to handle in that area. Also see if Dave Brackman will respond here he has lake in California and knows quite a bit about bass genetics in the area and just had his lake DNA tested. Dave and help?
