No it's not a new GSA weapon. It was a show that I watched on TV last night. Ricki is at her folks for a couple of weeks and so I'm currently unsupervised (not good for me or anyone within verbal, physical or keyboard striking distance) so I'm exploring weird and unusual TV shows (what, JHAP is interested in weird and unusual stuff you might ask?). Anyhoo, I'm watching the TV (not sure what channel because I was attempting to watch three shows at once, now this may sound easy but I assure you that it is not, sure any amateur can watch two shows at once, most TV remotes have a simple button that lets you go back and forth between two channels that's child's play, but it takes a certain amount of skill to watch 3 or more shows at once. There are times when a male must perform this task however, last night was a perfect example. I was watching the horror movie "The Hills have Eyes" for lord knows what reason, and a show about Harley's (a hog of a different breed) because they have horsepower and chrome and any man's man can't have too much of either so I felt compelled to watch that show as well and this show comes on called Pig Bomb. It was a discussion about the impact of wild pigs running a muck (or I guess feral would be a better word, I don't want to start an argument about what a wild pig is). Very interesting show. It appears as though wild pigs (hogs? what the heck is the difference between a pig and a hog?) are evolving in Texas and Georgia to become larger and more aggressive. It was suggested by the show that a person in Georgia (I think it was Georgia) imported some European boars (pig? hog? boar? how am I supposed to keep this stuff straight?) and turned them loose and now they are breeding with the existing feral hog population and are changing the physical and behavioral characteristics of the feral hog population. UC Davis has begun a program to analyse the DNA of the feral hog population to determine how it is changing. Interest stuff. Now I understand the frustration that some of you guys have when discussing wild hogs.

Oh and before anyone suggests that I should get TIVO, I feel compelled to state that we have a hard disk drive recorder that was recording yet another show. Dateline I think.

Finally, since I'm partially confessing my sins here, I also feel compelled to say that I also watched, for the very first time, a show called Manswers. I learned a lot of factiods none of which are suitable for this audience.

Manswers, that comes on Spike right after UFC, fight? So you like to watch(as my wife explains it, men hugging on the ground in little shorts, because every time she walks in they are doing some sort of Brazilian JU JITSU, but I like the standup striking part of it, which is never what theyre doing when she walks in).
Yes, Manswers is a little different sort of show, some may even call it distasteful. But at least is is targeted toward men, as in the name Manswers. What about MTV, which targets teeny boppers, talk about low life!

Wild hog meat tastes good and they are fun to hunt.

But make no mistake. They are VARMINTS of the highest order.

When in Japan we went to a cookout up the side of a mountain in an orange orchard. The guy had an electric fence around his orchard and I ask my son to ask him what it was for and he said wild pigs. He said they are tearing everything up. They are everywhere.

In Dog Beers, I've had one.

I don't think ferals get larger than or outgrow barnyard swine. They just don't go to market before they get their full growth.

When they first moved in on me, they made a mess. They were everywhere. Being nocturnal, control is out of the question. I'm not about to stay up all night to hunt them. However, they really didn't cause much of a problem. They messed up a couple of small ponds by rolling in the clay but those dry up anyway. They absolutely demolished a corn feeder but that stopped when I put TPosts at the legs. However, I had to drive the posts parallel to the feeder legs and wire them together. They seemed to graze on my wheat but didn't root it except in 2 or 3 places. My Grandson solved the problem by shooting one of them. They moved out and now I see tracks of some lone boars but they really haven't come back in force for the last 3 years.

Sorry about that Rmedgar.

What struck me about the show was a couple of things. IIRC the program correctly, pigs were not native to the US. Although I think this is technically correct I think it is a little misleading in that the Peccary (Javalina) is and although not technically a pig it sure looks like one. Anyway, the program mentioned that the first true pigs were brought to the US by Columbus and released in Florida (I think).

In some areas these wild pigs have caused quite a bit of crop destruction and are a danger to humans. There have been several people severly injured with encounters with them and I'm not talking about hunters that are seek out the animials (that you would somewhat expect) there have been several cases of these wild pigs attacking without in provocation.

Fortunately as yet they cannot fly. (If they ever do learn how to fly however I can assure you that I'll be getting a lot of neat stuff that depended upon this very condition).

My good friend DIED knows that as a ciy raised guy I don't know always know how to conduct myself while in the country. He is always looking out for me and providing me with useful advice in an attempt to limit the amount of stupid things that I do while in a rural environment. Given the concern over swine flu, DIED sent this to me:

From the Disease Center in Atlanta

CDC Warning: ***DO NOT DO THIS!!!***

Wild hogs are good to eat and can be fun to hunt but they are a varmit. they are such a prolific breeder that it doesn't take long for them to get out of hand. They are very destructive on crops and rangeland. I think there aggression is a little over hyped, unless you are dealing with a wounded one or a cornered one. We try to keep them trapped out at the ranch.

The mean one are the Javi's those little devils will flat out get you if surprised.

WV introduced nearly pure blooded wild boar to their state back in the 70's. For a couple decades they did well, going from 50 or so, to over 10,000 pigs. Then the strip mining, clear cutting and invasion of coyotes and bear population boom and the pig numbers tanked. I think wild boar are far less prolific compared to feral pigs which seem to breed like rabbits...

We got them here too. Apparently there are a few farms raising wild boar for meat and some have escaped and are considered established in the wild. My county has a $50 bounty on them. Land owners are encouraging hunters to come get em.

I wonder what the difference is in wild boar meat and plain old hog meat.

I've only eaten one wild pig. It was a small one that my Grandson shot. I really didn't care for it and good pork is pretty cheap.

Wild boar farms are big money these days... Lots of ritzy restaurants want to serve it. Is it truly wild boar meat though if its raised on a farm? HAHA
