Hi I have two ponds and one of them is about 1 1/2 acres and the other is about an acre. The smaller one holds water extreamly well and every time it raines has so much extra water that it floods and takes every thing out in its path Every thing but the problem is the biger tank leakes so badly that it dries up almost every other year and its abought 15 feet in 90% of the pond we have already tried bentonite over the whole pond we have talked about renovating the pond but I thought it might be easyer to take and combine the run off of the ponds and make the smaller pond biger because the soil holdes water better.

do you think this would be easyer

Good Idea.
How far apart are the two ponds.
You might take the dirt from the good pond, if you enlarge it, and use it to seal off the not so good pond.

I had some minimal leakage this past summer/fall from a new pond built in the spring of '08. It would go down to a certin point and stop. Nothing radical but noticable. What are the chances that this winters ice, freeze, thaw, etc., will help correct this problem. Realistically!!!

I dodnt know but for us it has seemed to get worse not beter one of our ponds is about 17 feet and an acre and a half and it used to hold water but now it gets down to a couple feet deep deep each year and some years turnes into a kitty pool. And all this is after we have put bentonite init.

does any body know an afordible way to stop a large pond from leaking.

What we do for leaking ponds is usually plate them with 1.5 feet of black land clay preferably if available in the area but any hi PI clay will work 30 or higher

Afordible is the key work.

AdamsLand Has the right idea But he said available. It still cost money to move the material and pack it.

Bentonite same story once you you get it it still nas to be worked into the ground

Lots of home cures and when they work they work.
Feeding hay to livestock in the bottom of the pond is the first that comes to mind.
