I have a 1 acre marsh and a 1 acre pond on my property. I am going to add some smartweed and duck potato/arrowhead to the marsh to help attract waterfowl. My question is, would you also add some of these plants in the shallows of your main fishing/swimming/recreation pond? Does anyone know if these aquatic plants spread rapidly and become overly invasive? I wouldn't want them to take over the pond, but wouldn't mind having the plants in the shallows to attract more waterfowl. Thanks for any advice!

They will spread quickly, but fortunately they will stay shallow. I have used arrowhead multiple times with great success. If need be, the plants are easy to kill, but as long as you don't mind them in the shallows, you'll be good to go. Great habitat for small fish and invertebrates, enhanced shoreline erosion control, aesthetics, and food source for many critters- go for it.

Keep in mind some smartweeds are nasty to walk in, one called tear thumb will cause a major rash. Stray away of that one if you plan to walk in these areas. Agree with Shaun no biggie, not like a catatil that can grow in knee deep water. Keep in mind it can be difficult to propagate in presence of geese/ducks, turtles or muskrats.
