I had plans on digging a 1 acre pond for bass...originally I wanted to dig 1 full acre, but now due to time constraints, I have decided to dig a smaller pond about slightly shy of 1/2 acre size first. In the future, I would have the option of digging the other pond and possibly connecting the two. How would I connect the ponds....culverts? Anybody have experience with this?

How big will the other pond be and would you have similar species of fish in each?

george has an expanded pond. IIRC they left sort of a levee in between the 2 parts until the new section was finished, then cut the middle of the levee. The remnants make earthen fishing piers out into the middle of the expanded pond.

AG, “it all depends” on the topography of your property, whether your planned pond will be “dug-out” or impoundment.
We “dug-out” our second small pond, at higher elevation, and broke the levee to flood new connecting pond.

We dug new pond during 4-5 ft water drought period, making new pond a depth of 8-ft at full pool, deepest part of main pond 10-12 ft.

Otto is the expert and maybe he will chime in?
