I was given a "like new" pond water pump recently. Rated at something like 17,000 gph. Simple intake/discharge through 2" PVC pipe.

I plan to mount it in a protected area under my pier, lift the water 4-5' and blast it back into the pond to help with aeration.

Now here's my goofy question.. and yes, I have awakened at night and thought about this! At the (distal) discharge end, would it help if I added a short 45 degree angle to: shoot the water back into the pond with a splat, or a 45 upwards to sail the water through the air? Or just leave well enough alone..

You know you've caught "ponditis" when you ponder things like this!

You probably get more aeration benefits from a very low or zero angle, though straight up is more aesthetically pleasing. Circulating the water and exposing more of it to the surface is more efficient than local splash aeration.

Is there an extra zero in the GPH rating? 17,000 gph is a monstrous volume, even from a 2" pipe. \:\)

Your handle and terminology have me intrigued. Are you a displaced Cajun, a dentist, an oak tree aficionado, or any of the 3? \:\)

Always wanted to try something like this...can't seem to justify it at REC electric prices!

Can you attach a long extension pipe to the intake side? Draw water from the bottom? We had a similar setup on a floating pump in the big lagoon at the hog farm.

Worked well...'cept when it didn't. Then, you hadda unhook one of the 200' stay cables, reel it in, fix the dang thing and hook it back up. Always was a "end of day" job. Took a couple hours, then you wanted a shower RIGHT NOW!

I also have a high capacity pump with a 2 inch discharge into my pond, I use a 5 gallon bucket on the end with many holes in the bucket and it will take the full amount of water. On the end of the 2 inch is a 90 degree elbow to point the water into the bucket. I did not have any problem with the oxygen and hardly any fish loss and most of the time there were not any fish loss at all.

something i did on the end of my discharge pipe was put several layers of 1/4 in. hardware cloth, separated by a 1/4 inch or so.That cloth is stiff enough to put as many layer on as you want. A simple solution that busts up the water nicely!
