A few weeks ago I asked about using salt to fix a leaking pond. Thanks for all the replies to that idea. Here's another idea. A local told me that if you graze cattle (or pigs) around a pond, the calcium in their urine and the fiber in the manure frequently can plug leaks. Anybody have experience with this idea? If there is merit in this idea, does anyone know how many head of cattle and for how long you would need to do this. My pond when full is about 3/4 acre and 20' deep.

TIA
Rick

That approach has been around awhile; Oklahoma's Langston University lists it in their pond leak fix methods.

I seem to recall Lusk or Otto commenting on it once and saying that they supposed it might work in some cases and wouldn't cost much to try if you already had the livestock.

I've heard that story quite a few times. However, it has always been somebody else that did it other than the guy telling the story.

If the pond was dry, I guess it could have a chance but not much. Most leaks that I've seen have been due to a sandy or rocky spot in either the bottom, sides or dam. Sandy seams are the stuff of aquifers.

There's not much way to fix that with cow manure. Being organic, the manure would rot and have no benefit. If it were dried or emptied, then I guess a cow or pig could get lucky and compact a leaky area.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

This method has been talked about for ever. Try it and let us know how it works. Believe me getting a hole to hold water is always the most talked about topic.

I have heard of this also but was told it was from the compaction of the animals wading in the pond.

I was thinking compaction also, Ezzy. Welcome to Pondboss, by the way!

Like Theo said, I don't know if it will work, but it sure couldn't hurt (read: it's cheap) to try.

FEEDING;; the animals in the hole. The hay, mud and cattle all play a part in the sealing process.
