I am seeing fish with a tan colored disease on them ( ick? ) I lost a big cat that was cover with it and have seen maybe a couple dozen more fish with it ( all types of fish ). Anyone have any ideas of what it is and more important how do I get rid of it?

Thanks Ewest, I would say by looking at the pictures and description it is Columnaris disease. Have you had any experience with it?

...( ick? ) I lost a big cat that was cover with it... - Hopefully Theo Gallus checks in. He just hung out a shingle that leads me to believe he can help.

No I have not. The SRAC fact sheet has how to deal with it.

How many fish and when did it first appear? Were the fish that were exibiting this recently caught and released? Were tney recently planted? Is there any possible stressor on the fish? What was your water temperature when they first appeared?
Sounds like fungus on fish recently coming out of winter. I think your water temps may still be too cool for columnaris. Fungus is very commonly off color or tan vs. just white.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I would say it first appeared early April. The fish have been in the pond and only fish from my dealer go into the pond and no I don't think they are recently caught. Water temp at first notice was around 55 - 60. I agree with you on it coming out of the winter. The pond has always been healthy in apperence but this is the first year I haven't sprayed to kill off the algea. I am hoping to buy some shiner fry from Anderson's down in Texas and need a good bloom.

Why do you need shiners when your bluegill should provide sufficient forage? Additionally from what I have read the shiners will get wiped out eventually unless you have lots of places for them to hide.

My pond is 4 years old stocked with 4 - 5 inch fish and now has 8 -9 pound Cats , 2.5 - 3.5 pound large mouth, giant BG's. I feed with a Sweeney feeder and have an aerator system. I stock 20 - 25lbs of shiners every spring and fall it seems to be working? Is it possible to have to many feeder fish? 250,000 shiners for 250.00 is a bargain for me. Here in the north shiners are 8 -9 dollars a pound so I figure why not try.
