Pond Boss
Hello,

I am researching how to establish a sustainable population of trout in a pond with no inlet or outlet. It is aquifer fed. I don't believe there is any flow. I know that they require flow over gravel in order to successfully spawn.

Does anyone know anything about the possibility of using a pond water circulator to artificially make flow for trout spawning?

Thanks
For natural trout spawning, Also consider making a semicicular shallow stream or short trough-channel deep enough for trout to ascend the stream all powered by a water pump. It could be lined with culert and gravel.

Circulator will have other benefits in helping reduce the amount of filamentous algae.

Note that trout ideally like the upwelling of water from or up through the gravel to select the location and make their redds. IMO as cheap as trout fingerlings are or their eggs, it will be cheaper and easier to just buy fingerlings or put the eggs in a mesh tray and allow circulating water to gently bathe the eggs.
I have been working towards this very same end goal. I don't like having to rely on the fish man. Mark Cornwell did an article in a back issue of the PB magazine that showed how to build spawning boxes for Brook Trout. Very good issue. You can buy back issues of the mag off of the website. I think it would be extremely easy to do especially if you have access to electricity. Unfortunately, I have no electricity close to the lake I'm working on.
