Any advice on how to trap small bullheads? They are currently anywhere from 1 to 2 inches in length. I can see swarms of them swimming all around the pond.

is a minnow trap or 10 a viable option? If so, what to use for bait?

Thanks,
Dan

If you have a helper, look into a 1/8" or 3/16" mesh minnow seine.....

I netted several dozen swimming in tight balls in my pond already this year. Look like ideal forage for everything - but couldn't help myself removing them. Hate to think how many I've missed...

Yes, baited minnow traps will work for BH collection in my experience. Pellets worked well for me - if those aren't available might try pet food or beef/chicken/turkey liver.

Shotgun also works for them swimming in small balls.

I've had a fair amount of success with a cloverleaf minnow trap in the shallow areas where the bullheads were seen. No bait - just pulled it up every day to do "good fish/bad fish" sorting. I did try some stinkbait as an experiment but came up empty.

I also tried the 12 gauge (with steel shot, of course) and only peppered about 10% of the swarm. Maybe I was using the wrong choke? wink
