Georgia. Just to introduce myself my wife and I own 548 acres and we have decided to build a secondary home and a 4-5 acre pond on our farm that is about 2 hours away from where we live. We are in the process of thinning some timber in the next 45 days so I will be getting the logging crew to go ahead and clear cut the 5 acres where we plan to put the pond to save on tree removal costs. I will likely be looking for input as some of you seem to really know your stuff. Thanks for having me.

Yo 79, another welcome to the forum but this time from one of the good members. Not to knock on Texans but that kinda speaks for itself. Pat and Charly will understand.
This is just my opinion but if you really give it some thought, instead of one 5 ac pond you could have many smaller ponds, each being a complete different habitat. Smaller ponds are easier to maintain and control what problems that will develop. If ya dug one deep enough ya could have a fishery of all northern fish. SMB, YP, Pike and WE. Another pond could be just for trophy sized LMB and another just for huge CNBG. A pond with just HSB and hybrid Catfish would be very fun.
What ever ya decide, be SURE to establish a very heavy forage base. As Pat and Stickem suggested, ask tons of ?s and post pics. A fellow by the name of Bretski did a very nice job of documenting his project which seems to mirror your dream.

Be patient, take your time, read, research and read and research some more. Doing it right the first time will provide years and years of enjoyment. Not doing it right the first time could provide years and years of frustration and heartache.
