I'm a Poultry Farmer from, India, wishing to diversify into the business of Fishery.

I will be very grateful if some folks could advice me the steps to be taken in the proper sequence and precautions to be taken if any. I would also like to know if'TILAPIA' is the fastest growing variety with the best feed conversion?

Also, please suggest some good books which deal with the fishery industry in detail, I mean a book which fishery people might term as the 'Bible of Fishery'.

Thank you everybody
Sudhir, INDIA.
Sudhir, I'd recommend that you consult the web site of the World Aquaculture Society for articles and information that may apply to your situation. You may need to purchase a membership, but the cost of researching will be money well spent. There is no one fish farming bible because there are so many types of aquatic organisms to raise. Also, there is no one best aquatic species to raise because of all the regional variables. That site is:

Spend a lot of time reading about your options and visit every fish farm that you can. Good luck!
For some USA information about raising tilapia go to site listed below. Specific species information and a discussion group for tilapia are there.

check legality of Tialapia in your state. I will never forget a "really tough" question on one of my test. It was fill in the blank. the ____ is the fish of the future. You guessed it, the answer was tialapia. yes they are fast growing and have a great fed conversion ratio.
