i was thinking of a pond with wipers as a main predator and they do not reproduce from what ive heard and that ill restock every few years... some of the larger wipers would control the hybrid crappie...and ive heard and did some research that hybrid crappie do not reproduce as nearly as fast and as much... and the thread fin shad would be forage for both the hybrid crappies and wipers.

the pond will be a clear sandy bottom/some gravel as a suited habitat for these species of fish.

will this work? opinions? thoughts?

What are wipers? I've heard of Hybrid Striped Bass (HSB) but haven't heard of wipers except for on a car/truck.

Are they like "Purch" down in Texas?

Until joining PB I've always referred to them as Wiper's as well. Knowing they were a Striped Bass/White Bass hybrid even the Kansas and NE fishing regulation guides/booklets refer to them as Wiper.

For me on PB they're now referred to as HSB

It's a Nebraska thing I guess.

TP&W officially uses the term Palmetto Bass instead of hybrid striped bass due to their hatchery female striped bass x male white bass.
The reverse cross female white bass x male striped bass, which is most used in private hatcheries, is known as a Sunshine Bass - maybe because first introduced in Florida.
The female white bass is more tolerant of stress the female striped bass

All of our pond HSB from Overton fisheries are Sunshine bass, commonly called Hybrid Striped bass as per "Culture and Prpogation of Striped Bass and It's Hybrids" - published by American Fisheries Society.

You're in New York? I think, like redears, threadfin shad don't tolerate the super cold winters you would experience. Consider golden shiners. In theory, your idea works, however, not a lot is known yet about hybrid crappie's reproductive tendencies. And you may want another predator, like walleye, to help control the golden shiners population. Not sure stocked-only fish like wipers and hybrid crappie would be able to keep up with a rapidly reproducing population of golden shiners. Maybe they would if stocked in relatively high densities.

Agree with Josh, you're probably too cold for TFS. They don't generally do well much north of I-40. That said, Southeastern Pond has experimented and promoted the HSB/Crp/TFS combination. Their initial stockings were successful, I'm not aware of any longer term follow up. If you're not going to feed, I'd think it pretty likely that your HSB and HCr could control shiners, I'd worry more about XS predation, as your GSH won't grow as fast as ours do down here.
How big a pond are you thinking? How much structure/cover?

We call them wipers here in VA too...

Many folks around here refer to them as wipers also.

OOPS....back to our Texas "purch"...

as planed the pond should be able to exceed 7 acres with the the land that i have avalible and yea ill provide the correct amount of cover.

as just a plan there will a area with lots of wood like sunken shrubs/bushes and rock pile/boulders. which will provide plenty of cover and a spectacular view from the underwater water world as well as the outside. there will be as always a aquatic plants growing so i wouldnt be to worried about the shiners cover. i personally belive they should be fine.

wow im really happy to hear that the hybrid striped bass and hybrid crappie and as well the shiners will be able to provide a great stocking combo.

is there any other suggestions or things i should know? how much of each fish should i stock in a 7-8 acre pond?

I fully agree with nearly all of what has been posted above.

Since New York state is so big, and because it ranges from the rather temperate areas along the lower Hudson River valley and Long Island Sound, to the near-permafrost northern areas, it is difficult to make good suggestions.

Do a forum search for opinion about black crappie. Most say it takes at least 25 acres while some suggest up to 250 acres for the smallest sized watershed to control them successfully.

The problem is that crappie's reproduction is unpredictable. Things might go okay for a few years, then BAM, massive recruitment and a pond full of 3" crappie and starving bass.
