I have two muskrat holes in he pond about 15 yards away from each other. They are not being used right now. On the bank above each is an air hole, like usual.

The thing is, when the ground is saturated you can walk between them and feel the ground give under your feet. A muskrat had opened them up this last winter after all the fish died.

One is still below water level and the pond is slowly dropping. I ran a snake into that ones air hole and saw the water move when he went in.

I plugged one hole and dropped an oil soaked rag in the vent hole, the two smoke bombs. Sure enough, smoke came out of the the other vent hole.

Really, 15 yards apart, I'm wondering just how big that den might be. Now I have to excavate it and fill it in.

They can make huge dens...I mean a LOT larger than you'd think. I'm still dealing with the aftermath of one near my dock. Luckily it's not anywhere near the levee but still it's spooky how much damage they can do.
