I'm renovating my pond and I have hit rock as I was digging. It's a clay bottom except where I hit the rock. I'm using a trackhoe to do the digging so I didn't end up cleaning the rock off so there is still clay on top but not that much. There is still water in the pond so I figure the surrounding clay will wash in an fill any leaks. Does anyone agree with this line of thinking? I don't. For safetys sake, clay needs to be packed over the rock. Two ft. ought to be the safest.

+1. While you're down there in the basin with equipment and the chance to do any of the possible fixes, do the best one and pack it off with compacted clay.

The pond is only about 6 to 7 ft. once full. I didn't uncover the rock just hit is with my bucket teeth. Water is over the location already and not having any problems so far.

If no problems, it could be just some loose rocks with good clay under them.

I don't know how else to put this, don't think I'm being a smart A, but, I don't know if you've noticed or not but I'm in Alabama and we're known for our red and brown clay. Which I nearly pulled myself into the pond with the excavator while I was trying to dig it out. I believe it might have been just one huge rock that I hit the top of because on down the shore line I ended up diging past the depth where I hit the rock and I'm pretty sure it's surrounded by clay also. Also, the reason the water level is so low is because we are in an extreme drout. I'm keeping an eye on the water level just to make sure. I'm adding a link below to see the entire renovation. I've got to put in a couple of post for the dock we're going to build and place my tire reef back in since I forgot to drill holes in the top to let out the trapped air. Thanks for all the help.
