One of these days I'm going to get a boca grip and remember to take it with me...

22 1/4 long, 7 1/2 tall at the belly

Oh and for those that want to know - 4 1/4 tall by 4 wide gape.

Posted By: Bocomo Re: What does she weigh? - 08/06/15 12:13 AM
I'm going to guess #7. If you don't have a scale, you can get a circumference at maximum width to get a girth. There is a formula to estimate weight from those two measurements.
Posted By: Shorty Re: What does she weigh? - 08/06/15 12:30 AM
I would guess somewhere between 7 and 8 lbs. Nice fish!

Thanks for making the all important mouth gape measurements. Data will be useful.
Posted By: dlowrance Re: What does she weigh? - 08/06/15 12:52 PM
I'm ordering a digital scale today...this will be the last fish I catch without the immediate ability to weigh her...

I'm having Cecil do a replica mount for me - the fish is hopefully doing just fine back in her home BOW...maybe I can catch her again in a year or two.

I'm looking at several sites that have length to weight charts, but none of them take girth into account.

Here you go - LMB - bass weight estimator.

From -- http://forums.pondboss.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=65734&page=1

Guys :

Notice this. Standard calculation methods used for estimating large LMB weights (not RW) that I have seen are as follows:

L x L x G / 1000 for longer fish and

L x G x G / 800 for wider fish.

I have found that using the 2 methods gives a weight range that is accurate. But look at several of these fish.

No. 1 26x26x20/1000= 13.52
26x20x20/800= 13.00
Fish 1 at 13.14 is right in that range

No. 5 25.75x25.75x20/1000= 13.26
25.75x20x20/800 = 12.875
Fish 5 at 13.82 is half a pound over both methods. She must have had a big lunch of 1lb. LMB. laugh

No. 2 25x25x22/1000 = 13.75
25x22x22/800 = 15.125
Fish 2 at 13.48 is 3/10ths lb. under both methods . She must have skipped lunch. eek

Like us they come in all shapes and sizes and weights . Just don't start with the "big bone structure" human type measurement concept or we will never figure this out. confused

I have a 22.25 inch on the wall and she was 7.50 pounds. I also have a 23.5 inch on the wall and it was 8.25 pounds. So I would say it's in that realm like others have said 7 to 7.50 pounds I bet. Nice fish man!! Congrats!

I'm going to have to make an assumption on this calculation...because I didn't have a flex tape. The height was 7.5 - length was 22.25.

I don't know a proper ratio to calc width from height and length. If I guess a width of 4.5 - that gives me a circumference of 19.15.

Based on the above then we're looking at:

22.25 X 22.25 X 19.15/1000 = 9.48

22.25 X 19.15 X 19.15/800 = 10.19

That's too big isn't it? I don't have any experience with LMB this big. I was guessing the same as above, between 7 and 8 lbs. MAYBE low 8's?

Those of you with lunker creds speak up. I don't have any.

That seems more like a good measurement/weight to me.

Some weights for corresponding measurements of largemouth bass blanks used to make replicas (reproductions).

Length, girth, weight

22 1/2" 16" 6 1/4
22 1/2" 17 1/2" 7 1/2
22 1/2" 17 " 6 3/4
22 1/2" 18 " 8 3/4
22 1/2 " 19" 8 3/4
221/2" 19 1/2" 9.0
221/2 " 19 1/2" 9 1/4
Posted By: ewest Re: What does she weigh? - 08/10/15 05:14 PM
My guess

22.25 X 22.25 X 14.5/1000 = 7.17

22.25 X 14.5 X 14.5/800 = 5.84

I think your top guess is pretty much right...I've caught several 6 lb LMB and she was a good bit bigger than that. My initial guess before any measurements was just over 7. I've spent a bunch of time looking at pics of other LMB and just based on comparison that's still what I think. I don't believe she would be 8. I'm sticking with low to mid 7 as she came out of the water.

Cecil and I have a plan (or more accurately Cecil steered my novice butt in the right direction) and I believe the blank will be ordered shortly.

A very nice fish anyway you gauge it. Cecil will do an excellent job for you. See this.

Thanks for the kind words Eric. Blank has been ordered.
I will document the progress step by step here if that's O.K.

That diorama is sweet! Awesome LMB - I'm saying every ounce of 8.25!

Dale left it up to me so we ordered the 8 3/4 pound 22 1/2 inch blank.

Based on one that I caught back in 2012, I'd guess between 6 3/4 and 7 1/4#

Stick, 7 1/4 was my guess but like I said I've never caught a LMB that big so I went with Cecil's expert opinion...she's a fat pig no doubt about that.

DL,
I'm no expert. I'm sure Cecil is more accurate than I am. My "guess" was based on personal experience. That fish is a huge beautiful specimen. But, I did not see or hold the fish either. I caught one very similar to her in a private 75 acre lake in S.E. Texas in 2012....I thought she would go 8 - 8 1/4#. I put her in an ice chest of water and ran to nearby grocery store chain that had a meat market scale...much to my surprise, she was 6lbs. 12oz. Mine had a huge belly on her as well...then again, I've seen 10lb bass on a scale at a weigh in of a fishing tournament that I swear didn't look like it would weigh over 7-8lbs. I tried to get this fish back to the water but she died on the way (too much trauma with my driving, I guess...LOL). She's on the wall at my river camp...but, she looks nothing like she did when she was caught. The taxidermist I brought her to asked how much she weighed....I told him 6 3/4#....he said, he was thinking at least 8lbs. I guess it's like our PB mantra goes, "It all depends".

Post spawn she probably lost a pound and a half which would put her at 8.5 or more.

They really put on the pounds when they get packed full of lead weights! wink

Ha! You are most correct...back in the 70's, a famous pro bass fisherman (won't mention his name, but he had his own weekly fishing show on TV) on the fishing circuit got caught weighing down his fish with lead weights....then in the late 80's a different pro (wont mention his name either) got caught weighting down his fish with ice (a much more subtle approach, I guess). The LMB regurgitated some the ice while on the scale. I guess is was hard to explain how that fish swallowed that ice in his live well....lol

Not sure if I'm anymore expert than anyone else here as I'm sure some of you guys that fish in bass tournaments have handled more bass than I have.

That said, pictures can make fish look both bigger AND smaller so I figure we should opt on the high end of the scale.

I've also found photos can change the coloration of a fish depending on the lighting, background, or if a flash is used.

Took in a bass to mount once from a small local lake that did not have bass tournaments. It had a rock in it's digestive tract that was not only blocking it, but it was growing tissue around it.

Is it possible this fish struck and swallowed a rock? I know musky have been known to do it.

Cecil,
I'd say just about anything is possible.......maybe a big ole crawfish was crawling on the rock when she inhaled it...and the rock just got sucked up in the mix. I've caught many fish over the years with plastic worms and hooks intact in their stomachs.

Charlie,

Trout seem to swallow plastic baits and then not be able to pass them for some reason both here and where I lived in Massachusetts.

that fish is a solid 7 to 7.5lbs

Cecil,
I never said she passed the hook and worm rig...lol...I've just caught several LMB over the years where the bait was still intact in their stomachs (weighted hook and all)...some looked like it had been there for a while based on the level of irritation in the internal cavity.
