Right before dark. The HBG were active this evening, and I took 6-7 pretty quickly. This was BFOD at a pound and a quarter.



One of last year's stockers, coming along nicely. I would like to add that all the fish I caught tonight were taken on a jig beneath a float, and the jig itself was hand tied by BigBluegill.com member Mr. Dick Tabbert. I think he has a winner in this design.

Pretty fish, do the hbg usually have that much color on the pelvic and anal fins?

That top fish sure seems to have a lot of BG genetics in it, but so does the second one now that I review it longer. Notice the large difference in opercular tab size - yet I think both are males - but not sure I'm no HBG expert, not even close.

Thanks guys, it was nice to have some time to wet a line. Doesn't seem to happen these days as much as it used too.

Our HBG will take on this dark coloration as they grow larger. They are naturally dark anyway, aside from the fin markings, but it increases with size.

TJ you're right on, these are both males and I would classify these fish as Bluegill dominant in appearance. I would like to see the bottom fish fill out a little more, and grow taller, to really show off the BG traits.

I put a link to this thread in the Archives of HBG - noting the special hand tied jig used for bait and the size of the HBG that was stocked in Sprkplug's pond just one year ago. How big were the stocked HBG?

Bill, they were 3-5" when they went in the cage last year. This fish was probably on the larger end of the spectrum.

Still have a lot of work to do with the natives, but they are starting to show results.

Is the yellow anal fin tipping consistent with all the hybrids?

All of our hybrids display it Al, some to a greater degree than others. Some of the older males will have very bright yellow pelvic fins also. It almost appears brighter and more vivid during the spawn.
