This guy was sunning himself against my back door the other morning. Had he not struck at the toe of my shoe, I probably wouldn't have even noticed him.

Twasn't a good place to attack me. There was an axe leaning next to the door. He quickly became a two piece viper.

-- monster that he was!

I'm sure both of us wish he'd have chosen a better place to sun himself.

Appears to be a milk snake, in the colubrid (king snake)family. They're 100% harmless, and a favorite pet variety. They eat mainly mice and rats.

This little guy was a baby Northern Water Snake.

I generally don't like to eliminate snakes. Most of the time I leave them alone, or I relocate them.

But, there are a few snakes I just don't like. One is the Northern Water Snake. When small, they are pretty. But, they are just plain nasty. They really get nasty when they get 4-5 feet long. When they hide their heads and tails, like they like to do in the garden, it is real hard to tell them from copperheads. They like to hide under bushes near the house, and they like to bite. They don't brush their teeth, and they harbor some real crud that sure causes nasty infections when they bite.

Worse than that, they like to play "stick", and then they sneak up and drink all your root beer.

 Quote:
Boys and girls take warning, if you go near the lake
Keep your eyes wide open, and look for sneaky snake

Now maybe you won't see him, maybe you won't hear
But he'll sneak up behind you, and drink all your root beer

And then sneaky snake goes dancin, wigglin and a-hissin
Sneaky snake goes dancin, gigglin and a-kissin

I dont like old sneaky snake; he laughs too much you see
When he goes wigglin through the grass, it tickles his underneath

I've heard that water snakes can be pretty aggressive.

Our snakes are much more civilized. They run like crazy as soon as they detect humans.

We have a diamondback watersnake that has an astonished look. When you scare it, it swims out a few feet, stops, and gives you this comical stare. Swims a few more feet out, repeats.

When the browns move in, we'll have to thin them out. They can really make pests of themselves. They're not scary or dangerous, just too numerous, and they get pretty big.

Bobad our pond is full of this species. I don't mess with them unless of course they decide to make up residents on my porch. I have had to split a few my self. I've been bit by a rat snake at my back door and had to kill one in our bathroom last year and it disturbed my nap on sunday afternoon to boot.

Got a little close to a copperhead at Lake Ray Roberts about 10 years ago. The snake relieved me of a week of work, 6 weeks of wearing a right dress shoe for work and about $4K to Denton Regional hospital(3.5 days). Here at the BarO we shoot first ........ identify later.
