Good morning.

I was ready to order a trail camera from Cabelas this morning to place out near the pond. I was looking at Moultrie's thinking they were decent. However, when I started reading through the reviews, they made me a little nervous as there seem to be a lot of complaints.

I am curious as to what fellow pondbossers are using out there that seems reliable, etc...

Thanks!

The older Moutries where bad and the customer service is questionable at best. But that said I currently use an I45 and a I65 and have had no problems with them for over a year. The new design is much more water tight and the displays seam to be holding up well. My I45 has taken over 15000 pics and is still going strong. It runs though a set of batteries about every 5000 - 6000 pictures. The I65 is being used as a timelapse camera to take pictures of the new pond and to watch the water level. Once I am satisfied that the pond is holding water (getting close to this) I will move it and use it in my deer survey.

What do you want to accomplish with the camera? I am thinking about buying a plot watcher and place it in front of a stand before I hunt it to make sure there is activity there.

Ah the hunt for a game camera. It'll drive you nuts. A great site is Trail Cam Pro. I really like the method that they use to evaluate cameras.

After doing all of the research just a couple of months ago I came to the following conclusion. IMHO, if money is not an object then Reconyx makes the best game camera. No other camera comes close in reaction time and detection range. But they are pricy at over $500 each. If I had an unlimited budget my choice would be a Reconyx RC60.

Beyond that it comes down to what you need in a camera. I needed long battery life and since I was buying 7 of them I wasn't going to shell out $500 per camera.

For long battery life Bushnell is hard to beat.

My other piece of advice is that if you are thinking about buying a game camera then do your research and then contact Greg Grimes. Greg saved me serious money on my game cameras.

JHAP, I like the reviews on here a bit better. I think they go into more detail on how the camera works, and they do long term testing. I think both web sites should be used and averaged together.

I just bought 2 Primos Truth Cam 35's from Greg. The reviews on them are great and the price is hard to beat for what the camera offers. I just bought a Plot Watcher as well. So we'll see how they work for me personally.

The big questions are, what do you want to spend and what do you want to do with the camera?
