If all goes well I'll get to fish in Pa again this weekend. I'm wondering if anybody here fishes in Pa and Will or should what I've been usinng during the summer work. I also picked up a fly bubble and expect to try poppers but not sure if it's too late in the year. I expect to use mepps,rooster tail,or a small rebel pencil type lure.

It's too late for poppers. I'd try the other lures, starting with the spinners.

What part of PA are you fishing, or what body of water?

It's called Larsen lake its has lehigh river run through it.

So that's Eastern PA. I'm in Western PA, so not much help.

Not familiar with Larsen Lake... I don't fish much this time of year. My time is spent mostly in the deer woods.

Well I'm back from Pa fishing trip. I was out on sat and sun 2 times each day. Unfortunatly the first 2 hours I lost 2 spinners and had caught just 1 fish. Later I came back after breakfeast and caught 1 more pickerel and lost another lure. On sunday I did not catch anything and did not have any bites.
While Larsen lake was very windy and rough on Saturday the water was clear and relativly calm on Sunday. So far the only lures that have caught fish for me have been Mepps #1 spinners and I caught 1 this weekend on a jointed rebel minnow type. The water where I'm fishing is quite shallow and I'm not sure I can get to deeper water. I am casting from the bank and I do not think this particular lake is very deep at all.
Ona side note I've brought my reel home with hopes of changing my line and getting some better distance on my casts. With a spinner around 3/16 of an ounce I am getting about 60 yards max with 6# mono on an ultralight with a 7' rod. Would or should I get better distance wand what line would you try or go with ? I'd love to go with a high visability line maybe even braided. It's not an expensive reel but seems to work well.

Your distance doesn't sound too shabby. I like a limp line for spinning reels. If you do go with a braided line, you probably should tie on a leader of mono - braided like is pretty visible to fish. What's causing you to lose lures, getting hung up, or fish cutting the line?

If you are reeling the lure up close to the rod tip before casting, try letting it hang down two feet or so. It might get you a bit more distance. You may know this, but if you hold the rod tip up high when reeling, the lure will run a bit shallower.

I got hung up 2 times but I guess I tied the one on badly because it came off on a cast. I was a bit cold.

I read some where that for lighter lures and long distance casts the best reel you can use is a spincaster (push button reel) I have expermented with this in the past, and a quality spincaster like the Diawa Goldcast reel will give you more distance. I have casted straight Rapalas (#9 or #11) with this reel up against a spinning reel with the same action rod, and pound test line. You do get more distance with the spincaster then a spinning reel. I do not like using spincasting equipment and only resort to them for light lures in skinny water for anti-spooking qualities. Incidently the Diawa Goldcast series has the best drag system I have ever found on a spincasting reel.

The difference in casting distance between 6 and 4 pound line is pretty significant IME... If you dropped down to 4 pound you may get more distance. Not sure distance is gonna help you though...

Thinner diameter line casts further & allows the lure to run deeper. But, when fishing for toothy critters lighter line doesn't help unless you're using some type of leader. Flurocarbon lines are supposed to be slightly more abrasion resistant than regular mono, and the braided lines are even more abrasion resistant, but they are much more visible than mono.

I was thinking that with a braided super line I could go up in strength slightly though down in comparable diameter.
Using a leader to attach my lures is not a big deal. I can do that if needed. So what I'm wondering is which of the special line have you liked that is stronger yet thinner than 6# mono ?

If you are talking about the leader material go with the berkeley 100% fluorocarbon, if you are talking about the braided lines (for the main line) go with the powerpro. the packages of braided line should have a sticker that states what #test of mono would be the equivalent. ie. 8# test powerpro may be the same diameter as 4 or 6# test mono (maybe less)
I am a very big fan of using braided lines with a fluorocarbon leader, I am convinced this is a big reason I lost so few fish this year after initial hookset. Less stretch in the main line means more solid hooksets and the fluorcarbon leader is even less visible than monofilament is. Don't worry about distance nearly as much as accuracy with your casts, it's a lot like golf in that sense. lure placement on your cast can be very important, being able to launch your bait farther than the next guy, not so much.

In late August ,and September I fished from a pier that was in the water. I caught almost all the fish about 30 feet from this pier on about a 45 degree direction towards deeper water. But now that pier has been ulled out of the water for the winter. The pier is 50' long so I'm hoping I can get about 75' casts to hit the same area. But I have no clue how much deeper the waterr really is. When out in a canoe in Sept. The whole area did notook particularry deep and It was very weedy.

10# power pro braided is similar in dia. as #4 mono, but the distance will suffer on an ultralite spinning reel. As suggested above, as good spincast with 6 or 8 # mono should give good distance.

If you are used to using a spinning reel, look for one with a large diameter spool. That will increase your casting distance.
I've got some different reel/rod/line combo's and a good laser rangefinder. If I can find the time I'll do some casting comparisons and note the distances. I'm sure that I have both those lures and I'll try 'em both.
