Just wanted to say hello to everyone from Japan. We made the trip, which is tough on old people. Since we are 14 hours a head of you I am intereseted to see what time this post. Isn't there some way to take advantage of this time difference, like betting on a horse race somewhere?
Posted By: heybud Re: Hello from Japan - 03/30/09 06:16 AM
It is actually 3:15 PM, March 30th here in Hakatajima, Japan. Actually in Japan it is 1515 o'clock as they use military time.
Posted By: CJBS2003 Re: Hello from Japan - 03/30/09 06:31 AM
Well, its now 2:30 am here in VA which means its 1:30 am in Texas... Hope you are enjoying your trip to Japan. I've heard it is a very interesting place to visit.

Shot a picture of this octopus in a store we were in

Posted By: CJBS2003 Re: Hello from Japan - 03/30/09 08:01 AM
Looks like a kite! How's the eating been so far?
Posted By: heybud Re: Hello from Japan - 03/30/09 08:26 AM
For you engineers, this is the number one suspension bridge in the world, which is next to my son's island where he lives. CJB the eating has been great and interesting and that is an octopus not a kite.

Beautiful scenery!!

Did you buy the Octopuss for lunch?
Posted By: Dave Willis Re: Hello from Japan - 03/30/09 01:42 PM
Thanks for the pictures!!
Posted By: burgermeister Re: Hello from Japan - 03/30/09 01:48 PM
Hey Bud! Nothing like dried octopus. Makes the sake taste better. Have fun.
Posted By: ewest Re: Hello from Japan - 03/30/09 02:07 PM
I still suggest beef and rice wine or tuna and rice wine. Have fun and send some more pics. Do they have any good beer to go with that octopus - you would need a bunch of it to wash down that cephalopod .
Posted By: jeffhasapond Re: Hello from Japan - 03/30/09 03:09 PM
Wow, Larry, there really IS a huge time difference. It's Monday, March 30th at 8:09 am here.

Sounds like you're having a great time. Keep the photos coming.
Posted By: heybud Re: Hello from Japan - 03/30/09 09:05 PM
I found a Sunil sized can of Asahi, which is really good beer. By the way the exchange rate is 98 yen per dollar.

Posted By: heybud Re: Hello from Japan - 03/30/09 09:18 PM
Here is the octopus and squid section of the store

Friends of my son's took us fishing today. We caught about 10 of these before a storm hit and we had to come in. We believe them to be rock fish

Wow Heybud, what a first class guy, wearing white gloves while fishing.

Keep sending us updates, makes me feel like I'm sharing your vacation!
Posted By: heybud Re: Hello from Japan - 04/02/09 06:19 AM
Most all the fishing boats I saw had this little sail on the back to act as a trolling motor

Posted By: heybud Re: Hello from Japan - 04/02/09 06:20 AM
Which way is Texas from here?

Posted By: jakeb Re: Hello from Japan - 04/02/09 06:34 AM
I think its the same distance no matter which way you go . Great pictures, and hope you have fun!
Posted By: heybud Re: Hello from Japan - 04/03/09 02:27 AM
The cherry blossoms are just starting to bloom. This is one of the most popular spots to view them. I will have pictures next week when they are more in bloom

Posted By: CJBS2003 Re: Hello from Japan - 04/03/09 02:29 AM
They are at their peak along the Tidal Basin in Washington DC as well. The Japanese gave them to America back in the early 1900's.
Posted By: heybud Re: Hello from Japan - 04/03/09 02:29 AM
You can figure this one out, I'm sure. Kinda cute though

Posted By: davatsa Re: Hello from Japan - 04/03/09 12:44 PM
That's hilarious! Some things just transcend language barriers...

I think the sign says "don't feed chocolate soft-serve ice cream to your puppies here."
Posted By: CJBS2003 Re: Hello from Japan - 04/03/09 03:08 PM
Hmmm... Interesting interpretation!

Posted By: heybud Re: Hello from Japan - 04/04/09 01:50 AM
These cages are several hundred yards off the shore and they commercially raise fish in them'

Posted By: CJBS2003 Re: Hello from Japan - 04/04/09 02:59 AM
Any idea what they are growing out in them? The Japanese have some of the leading technology for aquaculture, particularly saltwater aquaculture...
Posted By: heybud Re: Hello from Japan - 04/04/09 08:26 AM
CJB not sure what they are raising but will attempt to find out. There are so many kinds of fish in the grocery stores here I can't believe it.
Posted By: heybud Re: Hello from Japan - 04/04/09 08:32 AM
A cool picture of a fishing boat

Posted By: Sunil Re: Hello from Japan - 04/04/09 01:57 PM
heybud, thanks for taking us on vacation with you!!!
Posted By: Dwight Re: Hello from Japan - 04/04/09 02:25 PM
Heybud - Do you speak the language or try to?
Posted By: heybud Re: Hello from Japan - 04/06/09 04:17 AM
The following pictures are from a family gathering we were invited to. The location was spectacular underneath the cherry trees in the middle of an orange orchard. The walk up to it was about 400 yards and damn near killed me. Dwight, we do try to speak a few words in Japanese, mostly greeting stuff. Our son lives here and speaks fluent Japanese so we have an interpreter, which helps us a lot. Check out the cute little girl, she is a doll. Japanese families are like all other, they like to have fun with family and friends. We felt fortunate to be invited. Can anyone guess what the kids are holding?

The boy looks like he is holding a ready to eat water turkey. What is the girl holding; the other end?
Posted By: Theo Gallus Re: Hello from Japan - 04/06/09 01:01 PM
Water turkey backside has to be a delicacy somewhere.
Posted By: Beaver Boy Re: Hello from Japan - 04/06/09 02:24 PM
looks like they are holding moso bamboo shoots
Posted By: CJBS2003 Re: Hello from Japan - 04/06/09 09:57 PM
I don't know what the heck it is, but if it's edible... I'm crazy enough to try it!

PS Please be safe and keep an eye out for errant N. Korean missiles!
Posted By: heybud Re: Hello from Japan - 04/07/09 01:08 AM
The Beave was right, they are bamboo shoots the kids dug up for us.
The cook in the picture is cooking yakisobe and boy was it good.
Posted By: Brettski Re: Hello from Japan - 04/07/09 01:52 AM
Good call, Beaver Boy. I told ya; the man knows his 'boo.
Posted By: heybud Re: Hello from Japan - 04/09/09 01:59 PM
This is a Shogun's castle that was in the city of Kochi. It was built in 1610 and made out of wood. The floors and the wood supports are the original which is amazing. The upper floors were made for defense, including pouring hot oil on their adversaries. It was gorgeous.

Posted By: dave in el dorado ca Re: Hello from Japan - 04/09/09 08:22 PM
enjoying this in el dorado too heybud, thanks for sharing the trip.

those bamboo sprouts are HUGE.

my family owns about a 1.5 acre patch of japanese timber bamboo near sacramento. it grows over 60 ft tall and can be 6 to 8 inches in diameter. the sprouts are not as big as that moso you pictured, but they are GREAT eating.

Cherry Blossoms in full bloom

Posted By: CJBS2003 Re: Hello from Japan - 04/12/09 04:18 AM
Now I know why they sent so many to be planted along the Potomac River in Washington DC. They really are beautiful!
Posted By: heybud Re: Hello from Japan - 04/14/09 06:27 AM
This tree was planted at a famous shrine in Omishima, Japan. The tree was planted by the first emperor of Japan 2600 years ago. Just imagine the things that have happened since this tree has been around.

Posted By: CJBS2003 Re: Hello from Japan - 04/14/09 08:51 AM
Do you know what species it is?
Posted By: heybud Re: Hello from Japan - 04/14/09 12:24 PM
It is a camphor tree. Not sure I spelled it right.
Posted By: heybud Re: Good -bye from Japan - 04/16/09 01:14 AM
We visited this very special shrine yesterday. It is for boating and ships to remain safe. The amazing part it was built 500 years ago and is on and island right next to the city of Hiroshima. Some how it survived the blast. The only way to get to it is by boat. This will be my last report from Japan. We will be leaving in a couple of days. The Japanese people have been wonderful to us and this has been an experience of a life time. Thanks to all the PB family for following our journey. Hope you enjoyed the reports. I did learn that CJB can sure stay up late and a special thanks to him for coming along for the ride. Now it is time to get home and manage the pond.
