Just wanted to say hello to everyone from Japan. We made the trip, which is tough on old people. Since we are 14 hours a head of you I am intereseted to see what time this post. Isn't there some way to take advantage of this time difference, like betting on a horse race somewhere?
It is actually 3:15 PM, March 30th here in Hakatajima, Japan. Actually in Japan it is 1515 o'clock as they use military time.
Well, its now 2:30 am here in VA which means its 1:30 am in Texas... Hope you are enjoying your trip to Japan. I've heard it is a very interesting place to visit.
Shot a picture of this octopus in a store we were in
Looks like a kite! How's the eating been so far?
For you engineers, this is the number one suspension bridge in the world, which is next to my son's island where he lives. CJB the eating has been great and interesting and that is an octopus not a kite.
Have a wonderful time with your son Heybud!
Beautiful scenery!!
Did you buy the Octopuss for lunch?
Thanks for the pictures!!
Hey Bud! Nothing like dried octopus. Makes the sake taste better. Have fun.
I still suggest beef and rice wine or tuna and rice wine. Have fun and send some more pics. Do they have any good beer to go with that octopus - you would need a bunch of it to wash down that cephalopod .
Wow, Larry, there really IS a huge time difference. It's Monday, March 30th at 8:09 am here.
Sounds like you're having a great time. Keep the photos coming.
I found a Sunil sized can of Asahi, which is really good beer. By the way the exchange rate is 98 yen per dollar.
Here is the octopus and squid section of the store
I actually like octopus. Looks good!
MMMMMMMM Calamari!!!!!!!!!
Friends of my son's took us fishing today. We caught about 10 of these before a storm hit and we had to come in. We believe them to be rock fish
Here we are at a Korean style BBQ with some friends
Wow Heybud, what a first class guy, wearing white gloves while fishing.
Keep sending us updates, makes me feel like I'm sharing your vacation!
Most all the fishing boats I saw had this little sail on the back to act as a trolling motor
Which way is Texas from here?
I think its the same distance no matter which way you go
. Great pictures, and hope you have fun!
The cherry blossoms are just starting to bloom. This is one of the most popular spots to view them. I will have pictures next week when they are more in bloom
They are at their peak along the Tidal Basin in Washington DC as well. The Japanese gave them to America back in the early 1900's.
You can figure this one out, I'm sure. Kinda cute though
That's hilarious! Some things just transcend language barriers...
I think the sign says "don't feed chocolate soft-serve ice cream to your puppies here."
Hmmm... Interesting interpretation!
These cages are several hundred yards off the shore and they commercially raise fish in them'
Any idea what they are growing out in them? The Japanese have some of the leading technology for aquaculture, particularly saltwater aquaculture...
CJB not sure what they are raising but will attempt to find out. There are so many kinds of fish in the grocery stores here I can't believe it.
A cool picture of a fishing boat
heybud, thanks for taking us on vacation with you!!!
Heybud - Do you speak the language or try to?
What a beautiful country!
The boy looks like he is holding a ready to eat water turkey. What is the girl holding; the other end?
Water turkey backside has to be a delicacy somewhere.
looks like they are holding moso bamboo shoots
I don't know what the heck it is, but if it's edible... I'm crazy enough to try it!
PS Please be safe and keep an eye out for errant N. Korean missiles!
The Beave was right, they are bamboo shoots the kids dug up for us.
The cook in the picture is cooking yakisobe and boy was it good.
Good call, Beaver Boy. I told ya; the man knows his 'boo.
This is a Shogun's castle that was in the city of Kochi. It was built in 1610 and made out of wood. The floors and the wood supports are the original which is amazing. The upper floors were made for defense, including pouring hot oil on their adversaries. It was gorgeous.
Wow beautiful scenery Larry. Looks like you are having a great time.
Vicariously enjoying Japan - thanks Larry. Tell the child bride hello from all your PB friends.
enjoying this in el dorado too heybud, thanks for sharing the trip.
those bamboo sprouts are HUGE.
my family owns about a 1.5 acre patch of japanese timber bamboo near sacramento. it grows over 60 ft tall and can be 6 to 8 inches in diameter. the sprouts are not as big as that moso you pictured, but they are GREAT eating.

OH GREAT, next thing you know I'm going to be eating bamboo. Sheesh, better buy a couple of pounds of bacon.
Now I know why they sent so many to be planted along the Potomac River in Washington DC. They really are beautiful!
This tree was planted at a famous shrine in Omishima, Japan. The tree was planted by the first emperor of Japan 2600 years ago. Just imagine the things that have happened since this tree has been around.
Do you know what species it is?
It is a camphor tree. Not sure I spelled it right.
We visited this very special shrine yesterday. It is for boating and ships to remain safe. The amazing part it was built 500 years ago and is on and island right next to the city of Hiroshima. Some how it survived the blast. The only way to get to it is by boat. This will be my last report from Japan. We will be leaving in a couple of days. The Japanese people have been wonderful to us and this has been an experience of a life time. Thanks to all the PB family for following our journey. Hope you enjoyed the reports. I did learn that CJB can sure stay up late and a special thanks to him for coming along for the ride. Now it is time to get home and manage the pond.
Thanks for taking us on your vacation, it was the cheapest one I ever had.
HAHA, working a midnight shift will do that for ya! I enjoyed the vacation too... Some pretty sights we saw, and mmmmm all that seafood!
Thank you for taking the time to let us enjoy your vacation with you.
heybud:
I don't know if I'll ever get the chance to go to Japan, but if I don't I feel like I've already been there. Thanks for the pics and the memories.
