When things quiet down this winter I would like to engage the PBF
in a discussion of favorite night bass lures. Even Dwight and I do not see exactly eye to eye on this.

8 inch worms. no color preference.

Heavy duty spin cast reel that I can't backlash.

Dwight likes flat black spinnerbaits through-out. I like black spinnerbaits with gold blades.
How about surface lures like black buzzbaits, or black jitterbugs?
I talked to Stan Sloan of Zorro spinnerbait company, he said he
thought we were crazy to use pure black spinnerbaits without a
a bright red or chartruese trailer.
I have never fished a worm at night.

I don't have much personal experience, but my dad and his friends used to slaughter big LMB at a local lake during a new moon with jet black worms. Don't know how that works, but it did. Dark night, dark bait.

Black Spinnerbaits and Black Jig-n-pigs.

Black jitterbugs work great. Use a nice slow retrieve for constant "gurgling". The bass miss more at night (maybe 1 or 2 misses for each hookup) so don't get too excited and set the hook on each hit; wait until you can feel the fish to set the hook. If they miss, just keep gurgling along real slow and they will usually hit it again. Works great over shallow flats with relatively little cover.

The bad part is that two treble hooks in the dark easily lead to human blood loss.

Tried the black buzzbaits, but had way too many short strikes (a lot of them more than a foot behind the bait). I think they move too fast.

Lots of baits will work.

I have spent many nights observing LMB , BG and shad with lights , sonar and IR (auqa view). In our ponds LMB feed a high % of the time during summer mostly at night.

Two major ideas dark baits on top/mid range for silhouette and reflective baits because they reflect both visual light (we can see) and possible wave lengths that we can't but LMB possibly can. Both work.

Here is a different night trick. Cast a top water floating bait to an area you think productive. Let it sit for 60 seconds. Then turn a low power head light on the bait and move it slightly. Better hold on any time you shine a light into LMB water at night during warm water periods. I have had lots of fish jump into the boat and have been hit by many.

sounds like fun. I'll have to give that a try ewest.

My favorite lure for night time bass is a gold colorado blade spinner bait with a balck and blue skirt. I retrieve it at a slow steady pace. I can actualy feel LMB brushing up against the lure trying to hit it.

Night is my favorite time to fish in the summer.
