I stocked 10 lbs of fatheads last year in a renovated pond from a fish truck. I caught this today. Doesn't look like a fathead. Any ideas?
I could be wrong but looks like a classic picture of a male fathead in true spawning colors complete with spikes!
See this link:
info about spawning colors
Wow..thanks..never knew they changed colors like that..even their head has a different shape from the rest of them. I am glad because I want to use this for a Red Ear and yellow perch pond but havent stocked those yet. Thought maybe something might have got in on me from the truck. Thanks again.
Male FHM I'm pretty certain. Nice work on the photo Jason!
That one is likely getting close to the end of its life cycle. They only live to about 18 months.
They don't call them fathead for no reason. Breeding males are the prime reason for the fathead name.
Well I guess you never stop learning. If someone would have showed me that I would have never guessed fathead minnow. Amazing how different they look from when I stocked them. Thanks again everyone.
