My neighbor, who is from Missouri, and I, I was raised in Ohio, were talking this afternoon and a subject came up that begs me to ask this question on this forum.
How do you pronounce Crappie in your area? In Virginia, where I am now, it is pronounced like crap with a "y" on the end. In Missouri, and Ohio, it is pronounced like crop with a "y" on the end. Just wondering where the line is that changes it.
rick r.
crap...eeeee in el dorado
crop....eeeee
who would want to eat a crappy fish?
Well ya already know its Crop..eee here and when I lived in Ill. it was the same, so it must be futher north. And I agree with poland_jack who wants to eat crap..ee fish.

Oh my gosh! I hope this dont bring on another attack of PHS(pointy hat syndrome) for Brettski.
Where in Ahia did you grow up, Rick? I'm hoping to grow up here myself one of these years.
It's always been CROP-ee to me; I wonder if the Ahia pronunskiation is one of those North vs. South of I-70 things, like "greasy" versus "greazy", "sack" versus "bag", and "Cleveland Browns/Indians" versus "bunch of losers"?

Croppie, crappie, sac o' lait, all good.
Which reminds me...Boudreaux and Thibodeaux started to work at the JSC space center but didnt last long. Every time somebody mentioned 'launch', they went to get a sandwich.
crAppie = NJ not sure how they say it in NC

Sorry, Theo. Looks like I'm walking all over ya(doubled with you).
Rick,
It must vary in Michigan. One of my colleagues in fisheries class from the Grand Rapids area pronounced it Crap eeeeeee. Here in Indiana, at least in my area of the state we pronounce it crop eeee.
Heck boys, here in south Ga. we even SPELL it crappie.
Most folks here call them White perch , south and west of here its sac o' lait (sack of milk).
The ones here who don't call them WP call them crop - e. You could get some strange angry looks if you said crap-ee near the boat or bucket launch area -- someone might get offended thinking you are talking about their car/pickup or worse their trailer or fish-in gear.
True ewest! If you announce you are going out to the "crappie" pond ... well you might just be going alone. :p
But heck we rednecks still do it anyway.
good advice ewest, if i ever get invited to fish somewheres other than CA or VA i'll make sure and just say "i'm fishin for panfish".........
just thinkin about the crop-eee pronounciation......ya know no matter how ya say it it aint that apetizing.....cause it sounds like craw-peee, and who'd want to eat something that?
i went far enough on this perch, y'all have fun i gotta make dinner....

ooohhh boy, my fingers are a-twitchin'! I won't post it, I won't go there. I am on the eleventh step of beating PHS; this must be my test. I even considered admitting to Burger that I googled Uranus....AHHHH, I did it! I'M DOOMED...
(hand me the hat, please)

Everything I remember calls 'em Crah-pee...
It's crappie with an "a" not an "o."
Don't you just feel dumb when you say "croppie?"
I know I do (kidding, just kidding!)
This is a great topic & thread is because we are all so used to reading each others' words. Therefore none of the pronounciations or dialect comes through.
We call them sac-a-lait or white perch around here... about 50/50. Like ewest, I wouldn't dare call one a crappie around strangers. I know some guys that call the big ones "slabs", and it sort of stuck. Now they even call the smaller ones "little slabs".
Man! around the ozarks hills there must be at least a total of 100lbs frying in a pans 24/7. I bet I have ate 10 times my weight in crawpees in my life, and look forward to another batch this spring when the morels start popping up.

crop....eeeee in Louisiana
Theo,
Like you I guess I'm not grown up yet. I spent my early years in the Springfield area. So I guess I'm right on that I-70 line. My mom still lives there. We spent a lot of time up by Sandusky/Bass Islands though and Russels Point or Indian Lake whatever it's called now.
rick r.
yea and it's trotline not troutline...... country boys can survive especially when we fixen to eat cropeeeee.
OK so how do you pronounce "Wash"?
I know there ain't no r in it. LOL
Wash or warsh?

Of course a nice filet looks like a potato chip.

I'm goin' to warsh my cropee in the kitchen zink.
NWW, now yer really pushin it......i've been getting endless crop all my life about the way i say that word (as does my mom, dad, and two bros). i grew up just outside the D.C. area and everybody knows its pronounced "i warshed my car in warshington d.c. after fishin for crap-ee in the river"
that's my story and i'm stickin to it....
LMHO.. I knew it...I just knew it.
Really tho I grew up in Ill. and it was pronounced worsh. But I still know there is no r in it LOL
Well, having grown up as a southern California surfer, we have a lingo all to our own...
Dude look at this most heinous skinny fish.
Bro, that is wayyy cool.
Dude, what do you think this tasty morsel is called?
Bro, I think they call that a crappie fish.
Dude, don't harsh my buzz, your just calling it a crappie fish 'cause you didn't have the skill set to land this bad boy
No way Bro, thats the name... crappie fish. How'd you catch him?
Dude, like I tied on this thing with white feathers 'cause the red eye reminded me of what you looked like friday night, then I flung it into the lake. I felt a tug on the line and said "Hey Bud, lets partaaay."
Bro, I hear that it's six foot and hollow over at Sandstone Beach, lets go surfin.
Yea Dude, lets go surfn.
There are alot of words like this one for instance! I live in Missouri, Not Missoura

edited post......oh yeah, ewest, this may have potential for a poster session at the PB convention
Your right bohad, my step dad was from central Louisiana and he always had us kids to warsh the dishes in the kitchen zink.
While I don't want DIED to have to re-do the map, I want to stress that we are "wash" here in Pittsburgh, PA.
However, we are undecided on whether there is a "creek" or a "crik" running behind our house.
Wash and crop-ee are correct for SD! Good job with limited info, D.I.E.D.
How do you pronounce fillet? "fill - AY"?
Does that creek flow through a hollow or a holler? And if we wanted to have some cropee and warsh it down with a non-alcoholic refreshment, would we drink a soda or a pop?
Do I even dare throw the word "pecan" into this mix? :p
peee-can

BTW I pronounce almond the same way as you, but I leave the "d" off the end. Kinda like Aww-man (shucks)!
I think it is the southern draw...how about Atlanta kinda like Alana.

I wondered when someone was going to mention the mighty ABB of the old days.
Ok oh smart ones. Since we have ventured off the original path (partly my own doing
)... do I have any takers on the pronunciation of the location of our hatchery. Here are your clues: the spelling is "Alapaha" and the origin is American Indian. Any bravehearts out there???

Sorry. My original intent was to one of curiosity as to whether, in your area, you say “you-uns” or “youz guys“. No, wait, that wasn't it. Maybe I was wondering if anyone knows where the city of Balmer is located. I'm not sure about that either.
It's been so long since I started this thread I can't remember.
rick
You-uns and ya'll here. LOL

No.
"y'all" here in LA. When I lived in KY, it was you'un's". A fellow I know from E. St Louis did the "youse guys" thing.
In certain areas of Pittsburgh, it's "Yinz" guys.
Sunil - I think the correct Pgh spelling is "yoonses"
One of the better areas for speaking in dialects, I think is New York, and one of the better phrases I heard was "Jeet" Which translates to "Did you Eat"?
Jeet, is also Derek Jeter's nickname.....
