Pond Boss

Well folks, I’ve been meaning to post these pictures for some time. ANYWAY, looky at my new fishing hole. It finished filling in December and don’t drop much. The pond is “U” shaped – my wife calls it our half moat with our house sitting at the top end of the U.

This site gave me the motivation and know how to make this happen. Thanks also goes to Lakedoctor.

This is the North side:

This is the South side:

View from the dam back toward the house:

Morning sunrise view:

The geese come in each morning and I’ve been a few minutes later to work just watching this thing in the morning.

How does she look?

Very Nice. Congratualations!

Two questions though:

1.) Your leech bed is in the back of the house?

2.) You don't believe your foundaton is to close to the pond?

That could be a real problem leaching if it were in the back yard, but the tank is in the front yard -- on a slope going away on the south side (but if it overfilled -- yes it would end up in the pond) and I'll now drain it yearly. We have about 100 yards between us and the road and I don't know why they did not put the septic in the back yard, but luckily they didn't. But yes, I do worry about it, but what is a wannabe pond owner to do? Any other precautions you would take?

The pond is not nearly as close to the house as it looks in those photos. I'd say the closest is 40 to 50 yards and the bottom of the basement is above the water level. From the back door going toward the dam it is more like 60-70 yards. I'll try to get a photo from the back door facing the dam.

Cecil - now you are making me worry. \:\(

W. Robinson,
No regrets here. How big? I'd say between 2 and 3 acres. If I had to quess I'd say 2.5 acres. So, when asked I naturally say 3 acres ;\) ;\) .

Tried doing some rough measurments but with the shape and all I've about given up and eyeballing it.

Some of you experienced guys take a guess on size. Looking from the dam to the house that is a truck behind the house on the North side (for size reference and those trees are pretty big, but not old growth).

Little Dog,

Didn't mean to make you worry or diminish your happiness. Sounds like you're O.K. to me. The main thing is the house, and considering your basement is above the water level and you are that far that is not a problem whatsoever.

I know the feeling about "what's a guy to do" regarding eagerness to have a pond regardless of the negatives. My ponds are an area of about 4 houses and the residents have little kids coming over to visit from time to time. My pond banks are very steep and I need to get a privacy fence up ASAP. Not enough funds yet. If one of those kids falls in and drowns I will lose everything not to mention the poor kid and family.

to measure your pond get a gps unit and walk around the pond and map it.you can then go to office supply store and buy software for around 50.00 and it will print map of area and give size of the pond.

Thanks Cecil!

Outdoor, that is a good idea -- I do have a GPS.

The GPS is still going to be a rough estimate, though better than eyeballing. Depending on how many satalites the unit is able to see the readings can be off as much as 80'.
Couldn't you simply measure the parameter & do the math?
Looks like a great place for a pond! I'm envious.
Have you stocked it yet?

L.D.

Use a Laser Rangefinder, most are +/- 1 yard, much more accurate. If you don't have one perhaps you could borrow one from a hunting buddy.
Easier to measure with another person.

Divide your pond into 3 sections more or less rectangles, the main body and then each of the two smaller parts. Convert the area to square feet, add them up and divide by 43,681 to get acres.

Dan, I be dadgummed -- I never thought about a rangefinder. The darndest things go right under my nose sometimes. I can get one very easy. The way it lays I can set it in 3 easy squared or rectangled areas. Many heads are sure better than my one.

Thanks Ric -- I stocked BG and FH minnows in March and they are both starting to take feed pretty good already.
