Pond Boss
Posted By: SetterGuy Weird algae? Or,,, What is it? - 08/01/19 10:52 AM
Was at the farm yesterday for all of 15 min. Picking up items left there and dropping off others. Went down to the pond briefly to check water levels etc.. This was floating along part of the east side. The west wind had it pushed near the feeder. Is this algae? I’ve not seen this type before. I’m a cup half empty kind of guy. So, I’m assuming this isn’t good. Need more pics? I’m going back up to mow. Needless to say, I didn’t swim with this.
The dots are mostly about the size of dimes to quarters with a few half dollars thrown in.

You gotta love the mystery floaty stuff! I feel for ya Jeff, I just went through an outbreak of "stuff".

I found the following document that you may find helpful, but you may not like the direction is takes you. Page 5 has a photo similar to what you have posted...I'll let you be the judge. With a little luck, page 10 may be it instead.

Pay attention to the odor descriptions.

Nice find on comprehensive scum descriptions, Thanks.

Yep, pic C on pg 5 looks like it’s the one. Liver damage etc.. Not good at all. Now I’ve got to figure out a way to kill it, and stop it from coming back.
Thx

Try again: Messed up again...logged in...got this comment window...wrote a small humorous essay...post..."you are not logged in"...I'd forgot to copy my comment before attempting to post.

Danny, I'm glad I'm not the only one this happens to~!!!!!

Working now. So I gotta say, that document scared the …. out of me! I now have to sniff for that "pig pen" smell. The picture of the dreaded golden algae. The daphnia from hell!, plugging your fish' gills.

My BOW is only two years old. For FA along the shore, I use a herbicide that simply releases hydrogen peroxide, H2O2, which literally oxidizes the algae. I would expect it to work on bluegreen algae. Really for spot treatments, like shoreline, although I started experimenting with broadcasting to knock down phytoplankton blooms. The stuff floats up with whatever it oxidized then sinks again in a few hours.

I find this info interesting..
Especially the biological control method of using grass carp. That's incorrect, as GC can't even process algae.

Not algae related.
I use an app called Lazarus Form Recovery to bring back text from the dead. I think it is available for most operating systems, you’ll just have to do a Google search. It saved my bacon many times.
Posted By: canyoncreek Re: Weird algae? Or,,, What is it? - 08/02/19 02:28 AM
I agree, hoping that the mods or forum managers can check on why the system does that. I've had it several times where if you click the box to keep you logged in that it kicks you back out. I've also lost text several times. Workaround is to copy text, then backout, log in, then past text again but there should be a software fix to warn you that you are composing without being logged in, or it should always 'remember' your text and bring you back to that same composing window after you login.

UBB software is a joke...I've been begging for a migration for 7 years. Not likely to happen.

Happens to me using phone or IPAD but not on PC.

So, has anyone else had this algae in their pond? Is it really that dangerous? What did you do about it? I think I’m logged in. I’ll know shortly. Ha

I have had it in my BOW before and they say it can kill ..... it does smell bad. I added tilapia and in a few weeks it was gone. Not sure if it was consumed or if they lowered the nutrient level by eating detritus off the bottom, or it just ran its course.
Posted By: SetterGuy Re: Weird algae? Or,,, What is it? - 08/02/19 02:33 PM
I don’t have the tilapia option in Missouri. I wonder if copper sulfate will work on it? I have some left from my FA outbreak this spring.
Thx

Hmm, not much feedback on this weird algae. Nothing to worry about? Maybe I can just skim it off.

Maybe Bill Cody will chime in on your blue green algae problem
Posted By: SetterGuy Re: Weird algae? Or,,, What is it? - 08/05/19 12:48 PM
I guess this is an algae that no one has ever seen before. Oh well. I’ll find some one that will know what to do. Google May help.
Posted By: SetterGuy Re: Weird algae? Or,,, What is it? - 08/07/19 02:09 AM
This is from today. I did not have the copper sulfate with me, so I’ll go back up next week. I’ll try one last time to see if you guys have a recommendation on what to do? How serious is it? Should I try to eliminate it? How?
Thanks,
Jeff

Edit. No odor. I picked up some from the surface and smashed it between my fingers. Lots of fish activity on the water. Hopefully this weird algae isn’t going to kill the fish. No swimmers for now, until I get it figured out.
Posted By: SetterGuy Re: Weird algae? Or,,, What is it? - 08/08/19 11:10 PM
I’m definitely still trying to figure out what to do about this. I really would appreciate it if anyone would share their expertise on what to do.
Is it going to kill all the fish? Will it go away, or do I need to treat it? Any ideas on how to treat it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I apologize if I offended anyone with my suggestion for changes I would like to see with PB Magazine. I thought Bob was looking for suggestions. I was hoping my comments weren’t out of line.
Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,
Have you collected any and put it in a jar to see what happens? Does it die and settle to the bottom? I don’t know what it is, but maybe some one at your closest Mizzou extension or something can help. If not, they may be interested in it or point you in a direction.
In this case, where info was provided that had toxic health issues listed as possible effects of being in contact, I think you are better off verifying your species through a paid pro or an academic establishment.
You’ll get silence on the topic from me because the risk of getting it wrong could be too high.

Jeff, if you are talking about the green specs in the water then I had that or something similar back a couple of years ago. Mine looked almost like green glitter and I had no idea what it was and still don't know to this day. It finally went away on it's own. I am betting your will do the same unless it is duckweed or something like that. Sorry, not much help here but I don't think you have offended anyone by your past comments. If that was the case then maybe I have upset many. I am not sure people can recognize exactly what the material pictured might be and may need a more close up picture. Best of luck with it!

Thanks guys. I guess it was just coincidence that none of the experts here had a comment. I’ve ordered some Cutrine to treat it. No odor, so maybe my pond won’t be the next Chernobyl. I’ll get some in a jar, and get it to MU.
Thanks again.
Jeff

Chernobyl... lol.
I'm new here, but my experience is that constructive suggestions, serious reviews, and honest opinions are worth more to business owners and managers than brown nosing and sycophant behavior.
It looks like there are A LOT of people that come across the forum through problem resolution and some stick around. The forum is the reason I subscribed to the print. I don't think anyone would be put off that you find more value in the forum and choose to support it. The forum is probably the main way new people get exposed to Pond Boss, and it needs benefactors too.

FYI, this algae was gone when I got to the pond on Thursday. I’m not sure when it went away or why. There were no dead animals floating around in the pond. The fish were very active. I think I’ll start feeding again. Water is clear, and down about a foot. We haven’t had much rain in the last several weeks. I ordered two gallons of Cutrine Plus. Had it with me, but of course did not use it. This algae may have been the deadly one that kills dogs etc.. I have no idea.

No offense but that is an incredibly poor photo to be used for identity purposes over the world wide web. Maybe skim some out, place it on a contrasting background, then take a photo. Does it exhibit the texture of FA? The more information you can give, the more insightful the replies.

My best free guess, which is worth exactly what you paid for it: I find it odd it has the color of copper sulfate.

Ha, none taken. I assumed (incorrectly) that it would be easily recognized. I’ve never seen anything like it. Have no idea if it was particularly bad or evil. But I am glad it’s gone.
