Agree with snrub.... warmouth
Beautiful fish and feisty

That's exactly what my first thought was when I saw those red eyes. Mine tend to be quite a bit darker colored, but everything else is the same.

Is the warmouth the same as what we in Ontario would call a rockbass?
Posted By: ewest Re: Fish identification - 08/12/18 02:32 PM
WM and RB are different species.

Rock Bass, Ambloplites rupestris

https://www.efish.fishwild.vt.edu/families/rockbass.html

Warmouth, Lepomis gulosus

https://www.efish.fishwild.vt.edu/families/warmouth.html

That looks like a cross to me as it does not match the traits of either a RB or WM. Look at fins and tail.

My brother caught this today at False River, LA. First one he's ever caught there. Must be due the the limestone boulders he added to his seawall this past winter. I call this a Goggle Eye or Warmouth, however, it very well could be a hybrid, but I am not familiar enough yet to know. Hoping the superior knowledge here will help confirm its identification. Thanks!

By no means am I an expert, and the picture is a bit blurry, but that looks like a Warmouth to me. I guess it could be a cross, but with what? Any other pics?

No, unfortunately, that is the only pic he sent me. I'm pretty sure it's a pure Warmouth, but just wanted to check since I haven't seen one in years. Thanks!

1st picture, looks exactly like the warmouth I've caught around this area

2nd picture looks like a warmouth/res or something strange going on haha

JKS that looks like a rockbass but its pretty blurry

You can usually tell the difference by the Opercular flap - warmouth will have red or orange on the flap while a rockbass will not have this. It is much harder to tell the difference when they're small

Looks like maybe Warmouth/GSF hybrid

Sorry the pic is so bad, but it's all I have. Thanks!
