i am lowering pond hoping to eliminate some plants. i am not sure if i have chara or american pondweed. i have sprayed diquat, cutrine, and applied cutrine granular. i didn't have much luck. looks like i may have another foot to drop it to get below the depth the plant is growing. i have already lowered over 2 ft. should i spray the weed once it is out of the water or will it dry and die?

next, the pic above is something that showed up after a day or 2 of hurricane rain we had a month or 2 ago. i had just fertilized the grass around the pond a few days before the rain. can anyone id this green floating stuff? it isn't fa, it looks more like foam or a sponge type algae. it breaks apart easily. it is about 1/4" thick and usually floats around in patches about 6" in diameter.

Hey Scott,

Do you have a pic you could post of your "Chara or american pondweed?" IMO they look nothing alike. I know I will probably get blasted by other members for saying this but....Chara "leaves" look more like small pine needles while American pondweed leaves are 2 to 3 inch long "ovals."

i will look back and see if i can find some pics. what threw me off was the smell. what looks like pondweed has that strong garlic smell. i thought chara has that smell. what looks like chara doesn't have a smell.

any idea what this floater is?

I think I am safe to say that the "plant" is not American pondweed. If I had to guess from the photo and description of the smell, I would say Chara. Really need closeup pictures for the pros to provide positive identification. A closeup of the "green floating stuff" would also help with ID.

before my first application of poison there were little leaves on the plant that made it to the surface. it really looked like pondweed then. it quickly went away, but there has been a slow carpeting of some type plant growing on the bottom. ever so often i see a stem type plant that has needle like leaves. 2 separate plants.

whatever the floating stuff is has not roots. it breaks apart really easily. even the wind will separate it.

here is an old pic when it reached the surface with leaves.

Floating leaf pondweed. Great habitat if it doesn’t take over!

Thanks Andy! We had a discussion last year here on the forum whether this was Floating or American. Nice to get confirmation it is Floating. Looks a lot like American. How did you identify it as Floating? So far it is behaving itself and staying in an approx. 12 foot diameter patch.

I can’t be 100% certain without being hands on but looks like floating leaf from the photo. Is the floating green stuff on the surface or slightly submerged? Can you get a handful? Up close se pictures would help.

it floats on or level with the surface. no way to get a handful. it breaks apart too easily. it isn't gritty looking like watermeal.

Newbie question - is this the type/consistency of aquatic flora that triploid grass carp consume? (looking at notes from PB VII)

i am not sure if carp will eat it or not, but i feed heavily so carp aren't really an option for me.

i have been looking online and have about decided it is a type of blue green algae. i sprayed cutrine today, but i am not sure how well it will work. water temp is about 60. i also sprayed some of the other plants submerged and the ones on the dry bank where i lowered the water level.

reckon the cooler temps coming this winter will kill the algae?

it all started right before the heavy rain. i had just fertilized the lawn.

Is your goal to eliminate all vegetation?
Posted By: Bill Cody Re: algae and weed help needed - 11/19/17 01:52 AM
Pictures on Nov 17 7:40pm are of Chara that grows submerged. Pictures on 7:41pm do look like some sort of bluegreen algae. Cutrine-Plus sprayed on it should kill it but do little for the submerged bushy stuff - Chara. For Chara sometimes Cutrine-Plus granular applied to it will knock it back. Depending on season and density of the Chara it may require more granules. I would try to rake a lot of it out then apply granules on what it left after raking. Grass carp and tilapia will eat some Chara to help manage it.

i have some granule left that i could apply, but i am afraid it may be too cold now? water temp right around 60.

FWIW I only apply Cutrine when the algae is actively growing. Check the bag/jug and it should provide a recommended minimum application temp. IIRC it is 60 but I'm old and my memory is not what it used to be!
