Is this a true statement below? If it is are they talking about like regular lakes, rivers, and streams and such? Does this hold true for my pond that I manage and take care of? Or is a well managed pond exempt from this statement?

Thanks,
RC

FDA says eating too much fish can be unhealthy

It's supposed to be a healthy alterative to red meat.
But there's a growing concern that eating large amounts of fish can hurt your health.

How much fish is safe for you to eat each week?

About half a pound. The FDA says eating more than 30 pounds of fish per year isn't healthy due to the mercury levels in fish.

I had a friend who died with mercury poisoning from too much fish consumption, so the issue is real.

That said, generally this problem occurs in top ocean predators, such as swordfish and tuna. They eat many smaller fish which have mercury, and store this in their fat. I believe the FDA warning applies more to them than freshwater fish, though someone can correct me if I'm mistaken.

I lived in the lead belt (heavily mined area for lead) in Missouri for a few years and it was very common knowledge regarding eating too much fish from certain streams and not eating any from others. I have not heard of any ponds that were affected, but lead contamination can happen anywhere.

I've never been able to find much in the way of health benefits of freshwater fish....I'm positive that there are some ponds in my area that catch a ton of ag chemicals - including one of mine - but I have no idea what that means to the benefit/detriment of eating the fish from it.

Everything I've read on lessening fish intake has been related to ocean fish.

There's an agenda in this country to remove us from an animal based diet to a plant based one. Once you realize this you will view these precautions with much skepticism. You do know that catch and release fishing is BANNED in Germany, don't think it could happen here then you are a fool.

Saturday I wanted to eat some shrimp and I always buy wild caught shrimp as I don't trust farm raised crap. Yet on the bag of farm raised shrimp there's some message about eating seafood "responsibly" ie eat this crappy farm raised shrimp that's full of stuff. Many of the shows on netflix about the dangers of eating meat are supported and financed by none other than PETA!

Mot states have guidelines on fresh water fish consumption. The general rule is, the higher up the food chain, the less of that fish you should eat. I manage my water in the most natural way I possibly can to ensure the fish are safe to eat and the water safe to drink, literally.

What you put in your pond ends up in your fish, one way or another. How much copper sulfate, alum, glyphosate...etc do you put into your pond and eventually your fish?

What do you feed your fish? They are what they eat. How safe is that mass produced food Purina makes for the species further up the food chain, namely you?

It is my understanding that mercury is a byproduct of salt. The larger a fish gets, the more it eats from that environment, the more its body transforms that salt content into mercury. Case in point; Barracuda is considered edible until it reaches a certain size, at which time the mercury content is considered dangerous.

In a fresh water environment, salinity is minimal and unless it receives large amounts of salt from an outside source, I dont "THINK" mercury is an issue.

I've seen a lot of warnings on public water regarding fish consumption, but it usually pertains to carcinogens that have been industrially introduced into the system. Never saw one regarding mercury.

I hate to disagree with you, Mike, but, I disagree with you. Actually, freshwater fish are more prone to mercury contamination. Mercury in water, whether natural or industrial takes the form of methylmercury.

You are right to an extent, methymercury latches onto chloride in saltwater and doesn't degrade as easily as it does in freshwater where it tends to unionize with decaying carbon.

The age and size of the fish is the reason for saltwater fish to eventually have higher mercury levels than smaller, younger freshwater fish. However, freshwater contamination is trending down

I guess it's disagree with Dave day. I lived in the Caribbean for about ten years and ate fish most every day your response on barracudas is not warning about mercury poisoning it concerns ciguatera poisoning. It's caused by a toxin that the smaller fish get by feeding on the stuff associated with the coral reef.

Agendas most often involve slanted information.
