Hello everyone! My pond is finally full after being built 3 months ago. It feels fantastic. Now i am ready to stock bluegill this fall, primarily red ear an hybrid. I put ten pounds of fhm nearly 2 months ago an let me just say they have multiplied rapidly. There isn't one spot of bank that there isn't just swarms of em moving around. My goal is to have trophy bluegill an also several trophy large mouth bass a along with the occasional channel cat for eating. However I want to stock predators this spring. WHAT IS A GOOD RATIO for my bluegill stocking this fall based off my goal?? Any help Will be appreciated as I want to stock asap! Thank you. Pond is approx 10-15 ft deep.

I also have a 3/4 acre pond that was dug in July. I spoke with multiple biologist and experts from here. An average of those responses would be 50 LMB, 1,000 BG, 0 Cats. If you insist on Catfish then reduce the number of LMB as they are predators also and although they eat fish food, they will also prey on the BG.

I am only doing LMB and BG in my pond and BG and CC in my dads pond right down the road.

Depends on your time frame. I stocked 100 BG 2" long +- into a 1 acre pond in early spring. they spawned same year & it is loaded with them. I did wait to stock LMB. On CC with my experience on another pond I have do not stock anymore then you want to harvest. They will eat everything when they get big. I do have a pond with two huge CC that I enjoy watching eat.
I am in southern Oklahoma so my growing season on BG is longer.

What is your goal, to have trophy Bluegills or Trophy Largemouth Bass? Depending on your definition of a trophy, you won't be able to have both in the pond at the same time. What is your definition of a trophy?

What depth is the pond? 10 feet or 15 feet?

Having a trophy Bluegill pond means that you have a LOT of bass 15" and not larger. Having a trophy bass pond means that you have 1,500-2,250 Northern Bluegills per acre, another 300-500 RES and only 40 Largemouth Bass. You have to watch out that you don't fish for the bass too much or they will get hook shy. That means not fishing for the bass more than a few times a year for the first 3, maybe 4 years. You can't have a trophy Largemouth fishery with only Redears and Hybrid Bluegills - there won't be enough food for the bass. You have to grow approximately 400 to 800 pounds of food for the bass per year, and that does not take into account the fish that have to stay in the pond to reproduce. You will have to feed and aerate the pond because to grow 40 Largemouth Bass to trophy status you will be pushing the carrying capacity in that pond, even with aeration and feeding.

Thanks for replies guys, in response to esshup the pond is on average 10 ft deep with occasional 15 ft hole. Trophy bass sounds nice as meaning 2-5 lbers. But I also like some hefty bluegills say 9-12 inches? Any who what wpuld be a good ratio to start as far as getting bluegill base this fall. I just don't want to have a pond full of thousands small bluegill
