It is times like this that I truly understand and appreciate the wisdom of depth and volume. About 1/3 of the 5 ac surface area is 13 - 14' at normal pool. About 1/2 is 8' - 12' of varying topography, and the rest is the shallows of a seasonal wetland zone. I remember when we put all those tires and other junk down there. I really hoped and assumed that the only ones that would ever see it again lived below the surface. Not so, I guess.
Assuming that this drought will not last forever (cross my fingers), I think the waterborne creatures will survive. My biggest concern right now is how badly the cover and structure stuff will get beat at ice-in.

Down 4 plus feet since the high last June. The shallow water diffuser went in at about 3ish feet early last november, now it is fully exposed

Brettski, it's not only the guys in Texas. I'm down about 33" from full pool and that's with pumping 25 gpm into the pond 24/7 since the end of May. Ponds around here that don't have wells going into them are down double that.

It looks like your snow fence boxes need some repairs now.

Is it just the drought or have the muskrats caused a leak somewhere?

I fight what you are seeing in your pond on a yearly basis. Hopefully next year I can solve that problem by having a well run water into the pond and keep it full, or at least fuller.

Submerged plants really suffer in conditions like this.

I'm finding out this is a learning experience; There is a big difference between what you actually lost vertical) and how far the water has receded down the bank.

Since I've now installed a measuring device I am down around 3.5 feet from this time last year. Since the spring I am down about 18 inches and that is a with some seepage and evaporation. So the reality is I have little to complaint about as compared to others. I've got 17 ft for a total depth.

My well was installed last week @ 20 GPM and have added a couple of inches to the pond. I've mainly been worried about all the young trees and trying not to lose any other than the one we lost last week.

I suspect things will get uglier before they get better!

Brettski, I am going to make you feel better, my pond is in North Texas and we are down 12 feet. We caught one foot of water this spring which has been the only "running water" since October of 2010.

I look at my pond and drive pasture that is gone, see corn friends have that is a wipe out, and soybeans that are dying. I spent 31 years in the ag business and never have I seen it like this. Redbuds are totally brown, hackberries look like november, hedge trees are defoliating like post frost and walnuts are bare.

Historic drought for western MO. 108 tomorrow and according to TV weather wonk we have another push that should last 10 days before any hope of rain.

Use this time to do things that you normally couldn't do.

Because you're not really a fishing kind of guy, you may not appreciate what this is doing to your fish population. The big fish are getting a lot to eat right now.

Yep I was going to rent an excavator this weekend and clean the edges of the pond,but we have been getting some good soakers. I'm not going to complain so I will wait till it drys out again.

We have several that are down 5 or so feet this year too. Probably will experience more fish kills again this year.

I feel your pain Brettski. My pond is right in that redspot in the middle of Nebraska. If it wasn't for our well, our pond would be almost dry. We haven't had rain since the second week in May, and that was only 1/4 inch. Our well has run three times as much this year as in years past. I hate to see the irrigation bill at the end of the year.

Even in western NY we have "issues" which is rare. My new pond is down 12" now, even though we have has 1/2 inch of rain here and there. It is never enough to get any runoff to keep things up. It has also been quite hot for us, but nothing like the midwest.

Meanwhile I am looking at a spring or seepage on the side of the dam increasing in rate and trying to decide what to do about it. I have to test the water to see if it matches what is in the basin.

However we are supposed to get an MCS tonight which is probably going to pass supper-close to us. If it hits us, it may be a 1-2" rain. If not... nothing. I am expecting the latter as this has been the norm: watching the rain barely miss us to the south.

We are all praying for rain for our country's farmers and those in the midwest. I continually worry about the lack of ice up north as this used to be the source of cold air to wring moisture out of the air in the summers. A good tropical storm is needed to break the back of this dang drought.

My little pond is down 2', and the big one is just a shade under that. Looking on the positive side I'm extending one of the docks, mowing down ALL the cattails and clearing out some shallow spots with the backhoe.

And like Sunil said above, with all the shallow cover currently out of the water I'd assume that this year's hatch is getting devoured by the bigger fish.

But it sure would be nice to get some rain.

Yup, the rain missed us... grrrr! All down in PA or up in Canada this year. A bit of a blop on the radar this evening.

Last night on the CBS Evening news, there are 42 states experience some sort of drought. 2/3 of the states have severe or extreme drought.

I think the pond Gods have some sort of vendetta out on me... rain again "almost" missed me. We got 0.3" where only a mile away... 1.0+". So after three days most areas around me within a few miles have had 2+ inches of rain, and our little black hole on the radar has had 0.6" total. Not even enough for a little runoff. Pond level hasn't lost any, but hasn't gained any either.

Kinda making me a tad mental.

Don't feel too bad, Liquidsquid. We didn't get any at all yesterday out of our 60% chance.

We have been blessed here in central PA but my pond is still down 2ft ... It rains but the Sun is HOT !

It is pouring down as I type this!! Won't last long, but we'll take it, and be thankful.

My ponds have been down this summer, the smaller one as much as maybe near a foot. However, the rains of the past few weeks that have delayed my construction project have also blessed me with a close to full pool right now. We've been very fortunate to have the rain we've had, even though it has caused other headaches being so continuous for a few weeks now.

Really feeling the pain for all you guys out there right now who are dry and seeing your water levels continue to drop.

It did it again, rained 2" 3 miles to the south and thundered plenty here, but only got 0.4". Still not enough to get runoff. Watching the radar in action made it look like I had a rain force field over our location. It would dry up when it approached and then re-developed on the other side of us. Luckily got something, but it has just made me realize we have a significant leak/seepage.

Even though measured 0.4" of rain, pond only gained 0.2". Called the dirt guy who built it, but have heard nothing back yet... here is to hoping.

The Captain made a good post of encouragement for you guys suffering from this extreme drought before it strayed and got zapped.

We went through the same experiece of dried up ponds and fish kills last year and as the Captain said - this year, spring rains filled our N.E. Texas ponds before going into 100+ days.
