Pond Boss
Just went ice fishing on my pond for the first time. It was built in fall '16. My clarity has been about 20" during the warm months. I've assumed that's pretty good/normal. It is very clear right now.
I could follow a yellow jig until it hit the bottom @ 6'. The water temp is about 38 degrees @ about 8-12" depth. Should I be concerned?
In ice covered ponds it is normal for the water to become more clear compared to open water conditions. Cold water slows biological activity and plankton and bacterial populations are reduced in density. With ice cover the wind action that resuspends bottom sediments does not occur. My experience is the clearest water in ponds for the year usually occurs at ice out.
Thanks Bill. That makes perfect sense.
Enjoy it!!!
