Anyone building floating islands for their pond? Maybe to help filter or feed the fish? Looking for the best plants for a northern pond that can stand our cold winters. Comments, suggestions ??
There is an article bu Dr. Neal about floating islands in the Jan-Feb 2019 Pond Boss magazine. " Floating Islands: Clearer Water and More Fish?" It looks like a good article. Have not read it yet.
Great article. Can’t recall if it answered his question though. I’m going to attempt building a floating island that also doubles as a floating dock for my Texas Hunter feeder here in a few weeks. I hope to journalize the entire process for pond boss. Most likely several can learn from my failures!!
Im thinking seriously about a couple of islands for my pond. Mainly for shade and nutrient consumption. Thinking about 4" pvc frame, 4 ft x 4 ft, with galvanized chicken wire for a base and use some iris and other water plants to fill it, so their roots will drape into the water. Just have to be careful which plants.
The article discussed a floating stream bed island study they did about measuring the benefit to fish production and growth rates in a small BG-LMB pond. Streambed island had water moving lower water up into the island. Study ran for 20 months. Four test ponds four control ponds.
I read the article in PB this issue, however I am looking for some DIY'ers that have jumped in and got a project like this done, and what plants they found use full. I think after reading a few of these articles we all think about going out and doing it, but who has? and how did it go? got some pointers? Ideas? You sort of get where I am coming from, experience can speak volumes and spark new ideas.
