Hello, new to ponds and this forum! Thanks in advance for your help! I purchased a farm with two ponds on it 3 years ago. In the past two years this plant/vegetation has seemed to grow like crazy around most of the perimeter of the pond. Up until recently, it was always in the water. It appeared to be growing from the edge of the pond and going towards the center.
Recently we have had a pretty signifigant drought and the water level is way down and now this plant has been exposed and is no longer in the water.
It is like a vine...thick stalks/bases and it seems to be taking over my pond.
First off....
1. can anyone ID this plant
2. tell me if its good or bad to have (I think I want to get rid of it because it seems to be shrinking the diameter of my pond).
3. tell me how to get rid of it and keep it gone.
I've thought about spraying weed killer since its now on 'dry' land to kill it...dont know how that would affect wildlife in the pond though.....or maybe use my tiller box and til it up.

the pond is 60+ yrs old and I'm sure it needs to be dredged....but til then thought I'd get some expert insight.
thanks again for ANY input and direction. Tutu!
Cheers
JR

It's very hard to tell what it is from the rather distant photos. Can you get a sprig of it and take a photo up close (maybe with it laying ona white background). I am betting it is a land plant, not an aquatic plant. I would bet it is nothing to be too concerned about seeing how it is is not encroaching on the water perimeter. Better safe than sorry, so get some close-up pictures of it and if it has flowers...get some close-ups of those too.

Don't be too worried about it...I'd be more concerned about the lower water level in your pond.

Welcome to the forums, good to have you!

Hey guys, thanks for the input.
I'll get some better close up photos when I'm out at the farm next weekend....til, then take a look at these I do have.

As far as a land plant encrouching vs. a water plant....I believe its a water plant.....I dont think I was clear explaining. This plant was ONLY in the water. When the pond was full, it was only at the perimeter of the pond IN the water. It grew from perimeter to the center. So since the drought, and the pond mud edge is now exposed, I can see, it looks like the plant was only growing where the water. I could be wrong, but this is what it appears to be.

thanks again, let me know if these pix help anyone ID this plant and I'll get more/better pix this weekend.
Cheers!

ps - yes the pond water level is a bit concerning....but where I am right now, just had our first rain in 25 days and we are down in rainfall dramatically locally. So hopefully the fall brings some more rain and I'll be good.
