After manually fighting water primrose and alligator weed on an on-going basis, I've been reading many past posts and Habitat Herbicide seems to be what I need to try. Does anyone know if I can purchase this over the internet? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Almost any feed store should be able to get Habitat for you. Very effective but expensive; in the neighborhood of $800.00 for 2.5 gallons I think.

GOOD GOD!!!

I had no idea it was that much. It sounds like I'll be doing some manual removal for quite a bit longer. Thanks for the reply.

LB, you dont need Habitat to control those 2. Almost anything will knock them down. Glyphosate, 2-4-D, etc. The only thing I can think of that you just about have to use Habitat with seems to be duckweed, watermil. I;m sure there are other plants that respond better to it.

That makes me feel better. I have some roundup (glyphosate), but here that I shouldn't use it around the pond; and also have some 2-4-D, but have only used it on small willows growing in the pond (which worked pretty well). I don't know why I never thought of trying it on the weeds. Thanks bm. I'll try it out and post the results in a few weeks.

Probably for the same reason as me: You were afraid to poison the fish.

So 2-4-D and glyphosate are OK to use on water weeds? I've heard that glyphosate is harmful to aquatic life, and assumed 2-4-D was worse. I guess I have a lot to learn!

Some formulations of glyphosate are harmful to fish because of the surfactant. ROUNDUP is one that is not recommended for aquatic use. There are several formulations (AQUAMASTER is one) that are rated for aquatic use. Be sure you choose a glyphopsate that is rated for aquatic use then follow the label directions for adding a surfactant that is aquatic safe.

LIMB - I just returned from the PB Conference in Dallas and was going to post some pics - but thought I'd respond to this thread first.
First- HABITAT is completely ineffective on duckweed and watermeal - based on my experiences.
Secondly- a SINGLE application of HABITAT is usually far more effective on primrose and gatorweed than two or three applications of glyphosate or 2,4-D (the later options often require repeated applications for acceptable levels of "root-kill" - although a single application of either product will cause "apparent death" through brownout.)
I would encourage a HABITAT treatment for those two perimeter plant species (and several others), unless you enjoy the act of repetitive treatments. Besides the time-savings, this 1-treatment aspect of Habitat actually makes its use cost-comparable to glyphosate.
If you go with Habitat, be sure to use a methylated seed oil (MSO) surfactant as directed by the label - or a MSO+Organosilicone surfactant.

Kelly
Who is manufacturing the generic version of Habitat?

Thanks

Thanks Frank. I guess I heard that Roundup was harmful and assumed that all glyphosate was harmful.

Frank - Etigra produces an imazapyr formulation. But, there may be other formulators - although not likely in qt containers.

Thanks Kelly. What is the average cost per quart of IMAZAPYR E-PRO 2? This is probably more along the lines of what I need since my pond is only 1/4 acre.

Limb - probably somewhere in the range of $90-$100 qt., but depends on where you purchase it.

Kelly,

What % dilution is recommended for use on the alligator weed and water primrose? I'd like to figure out approximately how many gallons I could make from one quart. Thanks again.

1 - 1.5 oz/gal (3/4%-1.25%) are stout mixes - applied on a spray-to-wet basis. The best mix-rate actually depends on your water-volume (how heavily you apply the product-mixture). With HABITAT, I usually encourage a relatively high % solution applied with low water-volume (vs low % solution with high water-volume). With either method, you get a comparable amount of square-footage in coverage per quart of product - but with differing amounts of water-carrier.
Be sure to include a good MSO or conventional surfactant @ ,25% to .5%.

I sent you a PM Kelly.

Renovate-sold in quarts, with a good surfactant, will also work well on these two plants.
