I have a major coontail problem and would like to use Sonar or some other herbicide to kill at least some of it. I have introduced grass carp as well but am seeing no effects so far.(I have not given up on them and will continue to introduce for long term effect).
My pond has a number of impressive cypress trees along the shore and I do not want to jeopardize these. I am not familiar with the mode of action of the various choices of aquatic herbicides available for coontail. Which ones would be safe to use with respect to the cypress?

Layton,
Yours is a valid concern to ask BEFORE rather than after a treatment. Your cypress trees should be safe from harm that might be associated with any aquatic herbicide that is legitimately applied for coontail - including SONAR. I would refrain from using SONAR if your trees are in the water or at the water's edge *AND* have a truck diameter less than 2" (young trees). Otherwise, you should be good to go NEXT SPRING, for it is too late to treat for coontail with SONAR this season. AQUATHOL K or AQUATHOL SUPER K would be better options for this time of the year (using staggered/partial-pond treatments to reduce the risk of O2 depletion problems).
I've never seen grass carp bring a coontail problem under control by themselves unless heavily stocked. However, they may serve some benefit for maintaining the control provided by a herbicide treatment.
Let me know if you should have any questions.
Good luck.
Kelly

Layton - glad to be of help. BTW, did you contact a company in OKC for SONAR? Just wondered. KD
