Just wondering what everyone else is doing. 24 hours a day or only night areation. And, why you might think one is better than the other. Im only areating at night. Why? Because I dont want to raise the temp of all the water in the pond. Make sense?

Since I don't live at my pond the aerator is connected to a thermostat and It's set to turn on when the air temp drops below 60 mainly to help cool the water for the trout.

I'm running mine only at night especially in the trout pond to keep from warming the water during the day under the hot sun. In the pond with yellow perch and bluegills I'm only running it at night for the same reason although the yellow perch are more of a "coolwater" species vs. trout which are a coldwater species.

If I just had bluegills in the other pond I could run it 24/7 as they love warm water but since it's not necessary to run it 24/7, and it cuts power costs by not doing so I don't run it 24/7.

at night. midnight til 6am. why?
1. cheaper than full time
2. more apt to have low D.O. at night
3. Higher relative humidity, thus less evaporation at night.
4. Dont want to fry the compressor

I'm running 24/7 except for winter because I like to ice fish. I have LMB, BG, and HSB. It only costs me about $15 more a month to run full time vs. at night only. Outside of power consumption or for cool water species, is there other benefits to only aerating at night?

Like burger said, it's cooler so easier on the pump & electrical stuff.

IMHO In addition to the mentioned electrical demands and cooler water temperature I don't think it is a matter of additional benefits. I think it is a matter of are the benefits of running it 24/7 worth the extra electricity. I don't have cold water fish and want the maximun benefits of aeration. So I come down on the side of full time running. I have also read somewhere that turning it on and off, even once per day, is harder on the carbon blades, motor, etc. than just letting it run.

I think it really depends on what your management goals are, your individual pond dynamics and what fish species you have in your pond. So, it all depends... That is why we all come here, so we can exchange ideas and decided if 24/7 aeration or only night time aeration is right for our pond.

I don't trust check valves. I would be concerned about them failing and things potentially getting gunked up over time and similar concerns as bing as far as wear and tear during the on off cycling too.
