I stocked my new pond last year with bluegill and FHM. Lmb fingerlings went in this April

I am seeing a lot of fry and small BG less than 2 inches.

Any value in buying feed designed for fry or smaller fish for this time of year or grinding existing feed or do you feel the effort is not worth the benefit?

Bassdge, your question depends on what you consider an advantage. Aquamax 5D00 is fry powder, and 50 pound bag will feed a BUNCH of fry because outgrowing it happens so fast. 5D01 is a fry crumble, like a fine sand with the same issues as the powder, 5D02 is a small pellet. IF I were going to feed the fry I'd buy 1 bag each of the 00 and 01 and mix them into 4 bags of 02. Problem is, these feeds are for fish that outgrow them fast, naturally and meant for use in controlled growing ponds where the exact weight and numbers of fish are known to determine how much to feed...that amount can change daily.

I'd say minimal, but some advantage, plus maybe being a huge pain in the tush.

If your water has a deep green color, and an 18-36 inch water clarity, you probably have a healthy microscopic and larger food chain that will feed fry and your yoy well already

If you just want to have a little fun feeding them without a big investment, try a jar of tropical fish food flakes from the pet store. TetraMin makes some good quality food according to the ingredients and guaranteed analysis. My minnow babies love it!

I have fry and adult FHM & GSH. I am currently feeding a 3/16" pellet. Even the fry come after them. There are clouds of them after the pellets, just nibbling. It takes them much longer than the 15 min rule of thumb to finish it off. Heavens, in 10 min, the pellets are prolly just getting soft enough for them to start getting something. I tried crushing- half of it sank immediately.

There's green in the water, so the fry likely don't need to peck pellets, but if they like it, I'm happy to dump a bit more in for them and the tadpoles. The fingerling crush has a higher nutrient density and I'm sure there's reason for that. So if one wants to do the best, go for the Rainman plan. smile

I've been known to stand there for 45 min, just watching a wide swath of pond spotted with pellets and fish working away at them. I have no predators so they can take their time. I hand feed maybe 2 cups 2x/day. Always cleaned up later when I drop by. It works for me. The flake thing sounds like a fun novelty, but I'm guessing my fish would go through a lot of that.
