Most of the info I have seen states 2 to 4 feet. This is the range of depth I have put catfish spawning structures, buckets, 8 inch tile, and the remnant of the watering trough that burned (you had to be there) to try and get my channel cats to spawn this year. If this doesn't work I will try moving them around or adding more next year.

I made some once. Used 8 and 10 inch PVC, cut into about 30 inch long pieces with hardware cloth instead of capping off the end so silt could be fanned off and moved. Then cut out a piece of a round disk and forced it over the pipe so the open end was somewhat elevated. This also kept it from flopping over and putting the open end down. I never pulled them up to check but got a spawn. I guess they used them. However, it was wasted effort. Baby catfish have almost zero survival rate. I'd rather buy them.

Someone forgot to tell that to my bullhead baby catfish. I got pond full of them. I am putting the structures out so I can get the eggs out next time they spawn.

Place closed in containers in around 4 feet of water. The survival rate will be low, unless the water is muddy or cover is extremely prevalent.
