We had a pond dug over the summer here in Lufkin. It filled with about three good rains. Luckily, I got my pier built and stained prior to it filling up. I have a 50 X 50 area that is beach entry that I had some beach sand hauled in for, its a nice wading area for the boys. I have a 5 and 7 year old that love the outdoors. I got some old billboard wraps from a buddy and staked them down before the sand to prevent weeds from growing in the shallow water. I built a really cool fountain with a harbor freight submersible pump. The pump is in a concrete house under the pier and the plumbing runs the bottom of the pond then turns up to a fountain head. It gets about 10-12 foot of water spray. Then we dyed it blue. I got some pictures that I'm trying to figure out how to load. I'm currently working on clearing up my water with gypsum. Fish truck stood us up two weeks ago but we bought some minnows from the army navy store just for fun. Supposed to be another fish truck coming next Wednesday. I'm going to get my bluegill this go round and bass and catfish next spring. My calculations show that its about .68 acres and almost 3 acre feet of water. Any advice? Pictures coming up!

Just have fun

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I wouldn’t mess with it until Spring. What kind of fish are you interested in stocking?

Im stocking hybrid bluegill and minnows next Wednesday. Then in the spring I'm going to do my catfish and like 25 large mouth just to keep things in check. Pond is not as big as I described previously. I went back and measured again, its about 120 feet long and 100 feet wide, which is more like 1.65-1.75 acre feet of water, and about .30 surface acres. Am I doing that right? Average depth of 5-6 feet I figure with a large portion being the swimming/beach area. The gypsum didn't work very well. It took eight TBSP of slurry mix to treat one gallon. I did the same test with aluminum sulfate last night, and one TBSP of slurry mix made the pond sample as clear as bottled water. But you're right, I need to wait til spring and get through this wet winter we are about to have. Any recommendations on fish and or quantity? I was figuring about 400 bluegills and five lbs of minnows to start things off.

At .3 acres, I would skip both bass and bluegills. Both are spawning machines that will, sooner or later produce too many fish for the pond to support. The fouled waster leads to an O2 crash and resulting die off. As Bill Cody says, fish live in their own toilet. I would go with hybrid bluegills and hybrid stripers.

BTW, been there, done that on a pond that size on my place. The result wasn’t pretty.

Welcome ballkiddy from a close neighbor over here in Sabine County by Lake Sam Rayburn. Good advise from Dave, your 1/3 acre pond would very quickly be overloaded with bluegill and largemouth bass. You could stock possibly only 5 lmb and shortly there would be hundreds!! Bluegill in our warm climate area have been know to spawn 4-5 times in one year!! See where we are going? Good luck, enjoy, but do consider hybrids from a reproduction standpoint.

Great advice! That's what I've read about bluegills so far so I will definitely be buying hybrids next Wednesday. Everything else I read led me to believe that I would need a handful of bass to eat the inferior offspring that may be produced by the hybrid bluegill. Maybe i'll just do the 400 hybrid bluegill and then my catfish next spring. How does that sound?

Others will jump in i'm sure. In my 2 acre pond I have no catfish. Didn't want them making the pond muddy and I did not want them competing with my lmb for my cnbg forage fish. Just what I did. I only stocked 50 Florida lmb in a 2 acre pond and a full year after I stocked thousands of cnbg and res to build up the forage.

You might consider some RES as well. They don't reproduce like BG or CNBG, and they are helpful against snails & hence the parasites that snails bring.
