Pond Boss Forums INTRO New Forum Member Introduction Intro

Just wanted to introduce myself. I currently have 3 areas on my property I maintain for aquatic habitat. One is a marsh, one is a wetland restoration pond and the third is a 300 foot around pond. The last one is the one I am hoping to learn more about from these forums. I have only had it for 3 years and have struggled with it. I will be reading some posts and developing some questions to ask later. Thanks for adding me to the forum.

Welcome, Adam. You are in the right place for gaining working pond knowledge.
Be sure to give us your observations and concerns about your waterbodies. We'll also be interested in both the marsh and the wetland restoration pond. If you can define your goals for all, that is a good place to start. Many of us have goals that are changing/evolving over time.
Our poster RAH, for one, has a great interest in and hands-on experience in building and managing wetlands including a fen.
Fire away; you'll get ideas, anecdotes, laughter, and respect from participating with this bunch of folks.

Hi and a hearty welcome from a fellow MI pond owner. So great to see more MI folk check in. Tons of useful information here. I'm a noobie too but learning every day and at that exciting point in my pond development where everything is moving fast at once.

Tell us about your pond, depth, bottom structure, ground water pond or inflow/outflow filled?, fish in it? aeration? what is the plan for the future for it?

I'm near Grand Rapids but would love to keep tabs on who has a pond where near me as I may be splitting an order of pellet trained SMB and may also split an order of some optimal fish food this year too.

Wow I’ve been overwhelmed with info reading some of the topics. As soon as I have some free time in the daylight I will get some pictures of the pond I’m working on. It is roughly 300’ around and at its deepest is 23’. The previous owner had a guy dig it and it fills from groundwater. It was stocked by him with a few gills and bass. We have 4 ducks who use the pond. Currently no aeration which is something I would really like to do this spring. It has an old clay tile that comes in one end and passes out the other at about 8’ below ground level. Last August I dug down to the outlet side of the tile and put in an elbow. With the thaw about a month ago the pond began overflowing. I had the pipe about a foot above ground level. I climbed in last week and cut it to ground level and by the next day it was level and the overflow in yard was gone. Not sure if this is a long term solution. My main goals are clearing it up, providing a water source for the ducks and having a place my nieces and I can walk out and fish. Any tips and advice are welcome as this is all new to me. The first two years here I was preoccupied with other projects so this gets priority this summer.

Question for the mathematics majors on the site, "if the pond is close to being a 300 ft. circle what is the distance across? at 23 feet deep I am thinking that the banks have to be very steep"

Assume you mean that the circumference (C) = 300 feet and you want to know the diameter (D)?

C=pixD with pi=3.14 approximately

D=300/3.14 = 95.5 feet

Rah: Thanks, I knew Pi was involved somehow. That is pretty deep / steep for a pond that is less than a hundred feet across. Not a bad size for a small pond, but so deep.

I though it was pretty deep. The banks are steep, some areas about a straight drop off.

For me, the biggest concern with steep banks is safety.
