I want to try an experiment this year with my 1/3 acre pond. Currently, this pond has been used to raise fathead and mud minnows. I want to stock it with approximately 30 channel catfish that range in size from 2 to 5lbs. The goal would be to determine if they will survive the winter with no aeration and no snow removal. The pond is a dugout with 7' maximum with 4-5' average depth. Has anyone in the north had any experience or thoughts about the fate of the cats.

not sure this helps but in north georgia mountains, whee we have ice over for a month max. I have VERY poor succes with channel ctfish and have worked a few fish kills. So might be worng but doubt they would do very well in your case.

Greg- Do you think the CC's did poor because of the lack of disolved O2 or the breed of fish and cold water? Do you recall the total fish biomass per acre? Thank You

mnfish, I am sure that CC could handle the temps OK. It's whether they run out of oxygen or not that I bet will determine their fate.
My guess is without snow removal they are probably headed for a better place.
