Friends,

Last year, in southeastern Indiana, we dug a 2+ acre pond and followed a lot of great advice from this forum. We installed a 2 head aerator, lots of structure (~20%) including some Fishiding, and stocked it this Spring with FHM, GSH & bluegill. It is a bait pond and we fed Aquamax 400 all year. We can almost walk across the bait! I have worked with posters on this forum for everything (feeder, aerator, structure, etc.). So next Spring, it's time for the LMB. There is so much on the topic, but I have one simple question. What should I buy from whom to get the best LMB foundation possible? Which "strain" / genetics for this part of the country? I'm less concerned with the $$ than the fact that I get one shot at this! I want it to be right. Thanks in advance for your help. I have been thrilled with the guidance I've received from this group thus far!

Tiger Bass (northern x florida crossbread) or Gorilla Bass may be an option. I recently read an old post on here where Greg Grimes was trying to help someone in Indiana get them along time ago.

Here is the web site about the 2 types of fish.

BTW while I buy from American Sportfish (and several other hatcheries) I always tell people to check and make sure it is the place for you to do business.

Maybe someone here can shed a little more light on how these fish do in your area.

I would call Greg Grimes and see who is his source in your area (Ind , Ill). Those are good fish and they are northern LMB. If you want some other genetics I would find a northern source for F-1s. Greg , Nate or Shawn Banks may have that info. You don't want a deep south source for your northern or F-1 genetics. I think Bob got some OK F-1s and stocked them at Tony Stewarts’s lake. You could call Bob.

I would stock at least some pure northen stock in any event.

Call Greg for an update and see if the fish are doing well. I don't know for sure if those fish will do well in your location (temperature). If they are doing well, I know Greg goes into Kentucky with fish, maybe you could meet him for the LMB or twist his arm to drive that far North?

Dave,
Do you want your bass pellet feed trained at all or not feed trained?
Do you want to stock advanced size bass, medium sized bass, small bass, or tiny bass?

For the most part if you do not want them pellet trained, I would recommend getting them very small and from 2 different hatcheries...

Greg gets them here in Illinois from Fountain Bluff Fish Farm, Larry and Joan who run the place are very very good people with awesome fish...but I wouldnt get them all from there...I usually get the other half from Keystone Hatcheries up near Chicago or from several of the big arkansas suppliers...

what you can do if your ambitious is stock about 200 of the little guys and then weed out the underachievers in year two and three....when most of the bass are 10 inches, take out the 8 inchers and when most of them are 12-13 inches take out the 10 inchers...your not necessarily weeding out the bad genetic fish, but more than likely the male fish which never really will grow into trophies....

so basically do that until you get down to about 125 original stocked bass...then monitor their offspring when they do start to reproduce and basically remove as many of them as possible. only keep the best of the best of the offspring in the lake...

if thats too much work, you can simply stock 50-75 bass to the acre to begin with instead of the 100 to the acre originally...

Sounds like great and tested advice.

I like to stock select larger sized LMB (10 -12 inch) into lakes with lots of adult forage as you get the same results or better with less risk. You reduce the risk of initial overstocking and you know what the fish look like at a larger size. You also reduce the risk of losing to many small LMB to predation (BG and GShiner adults will eat 2 inch LMB). Plus it reduces the work and uncertainty. It will cost a little more. Do get your fish from several locations. If you get some F-1s then get 2 different northern sources as well. I would go with 75 % northerns and 25 % F-1s if you want F-1s. Try to find F-1s from a northern location - not from the deep south. Ideally the F-1 should have a northern parent from up north.

I prefer using small LMB when stocking them into a lake with small new forage (not lots of adult BG , GShiners etc).
