I have been thinking about stocking a medium sized river full of shellcrackers, black crappie and channel cats. My state has a permit that allows you to stock fish in public waters. Would this result in poor fishing? Thanks Sorry I have not posted about my 12 in hybrid bluegill but I have one pic on big bluegill website that is a 12 inches. http://bigbluegill.com/profile/Austin.

Not sure there's enough information as to if the river will become a good fishery.
I have no idea on the stats regarding how many fish will stay close to where you stock them in a river situation.
If it was me, I'd go for it but not keep high expectations.

River fish are highly migratory... Personally, I think you'd be wasting your money. How big is the river?

69 ft bank to bank I want to also say it does flood when a lot of rain comes in the area. The river is Abbotts Creek which flows into High Rock Lake. The place I would be stocking is 11 miles from the lake.

I honestly think you're wasting your money... A few may stick around, but most will migrate up or down river and be caught by other anglers...

I dont know but I can tell ya that I had a buddy that bucket stocked a small creek by our house up in Iowa with crappie, perch and bluegill. It really turned in to a great place to fish up until I moved away. Not that I am recommending doing that because no telling what long term effects it had but if you can get a permit and do it legal like it may pay off big....or it may not.

There is a certain joy in stocking fish. If I lived by a stream or pond, I'd be putting fish in it (not violating the law though).

Austin, Fix up the zone with some creative rock placements, downed logs, brush, etc and maybe start with a bit of supplemental feeding and you will be surprised what fish end up near you. Also bring in some fish from other parts of the creek and you will jumpstart the process without spending much at all. You will learn more with a summer spent renovating that creek than you will the whole next year sitting in school.
