THIS IS A QUESTION FROM BIGRED601
I am ready to do my second stocking. I have already added 8 lbs of fatheads to my pond. Now I would like to know how many coppernose bream I should add. The pond will be 2 acres when full. Now it is about 75%. I plan to have coppernose, large mouth bass and catfish. What number do you recommend for initial stockings. I will feed the stocked fish.

TODAY I ADDED 300 COPPERNOSE AND 4 MORE LBS OF FATHEAD MINNOWS FOR A TOTAL OF 12LBS. THE COPPERNOSE WERE 1TO 3 INCHES IN SIZE. I WILL START FEEDING THEM TOMORROW. LATER I WILL ADD MORE CN THEN BASS AND CATFISH. ANY MORE IDEAS ON THE NUMBERS.

Just to let you know my personal opinion, which may not be worth much...but I tend to want to go slightly below "recommended" numbers on the channel catfish. You can always add more later, but I'd say that in general, people complain more about too many catfish than too few catfish. Did you have a supplier who recommended a particular number? Theo, how many channel cats did you originally add? George?

I put 100 into 0.9 acre. I have since wished it had been 50 to 75.

I still like the 100 CC per acre. When you fish for them, there will always be some that are hook shy. Those pests will get to 10 pounds no matter how many you start with. After my Grandson/Podner caught one last weekend, I'm down to about a dozen. If I ever get rid of them, I'll probably restock with some 10 to 12 inch ones.
The recommended BG/RES stocking rate is 1,000 per acre with an 80/20 mix. Either BG or CNBG will do in Miss.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Theo, how many channel cats did you originally add? George? About 300 in 2 acres - maybe more... Every time a fish truck arrived we added more - wanted instant fish..... Big mistake - they are running between 10 and 15 lbs now - hook shy and hard to catch and eating us out of house and home. Follow advise given - stock fewer and add annually based on how mnany havested each year...

Big Red,
Have you decided what your goals are for this new pond? Huge Bream or Big Bass?

Dave,
If you don't have gators in you pond...trap 'em. A hoop net will nail em if you bait the net with a bait sack full of you fish food they are used to eating.
If no net company is around were you live they are easy to build. If you do trap them get ready for a big fish fry.

Forgot...the gators will destroy your net if you have any big ones.

George...
Have you tried catching the big ones when you feed? I used to get some big catfish out of my uncle's pond in Conroe with a piece of kitchen sponge tossed out when the feeder went off. You can't do it too often, because they stop coming up to feed for a while if you nail them too often that way.

Dave, Memphis Net has hoop nets although these are smaller than the ones used by the folks I know. http://www.memphisnet.net/category/nets_hoopBig Red, How big where those hoop nets Emil had? 5 rings at least 48in dia. and about 8 ft long with cones at both ends if memory serves me correctly.

Another option is a fish rig on your compound bow. I think Big Red has some good stories about taking big carp with a recurve back in the day.
